From Superdome to Astrodome: Mandatory Evacuation

The Governor of Lousiana has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. 475 buses are en route to transport up to 25, 000 people from the Superdome to the Astrodome.

Blanco said she wanted the Superdome - which had become a shelter of last resort for about 20,000 people - evacuated within two days, along with other gathering points for storm refugees. The situation inside the dank and sweltering Superdome was becoming desperate: The water was rising, the air conditioning was out, toilets were broken, and tempers were rising.

Takes my voice away... what can you say...
Mayor: Katrina May Have Killed Thousands Aug 31 5:42 PM US/Eastern By BRETT MARTEL Associated Press Writer NEW ORLEANS Hurricane Katrina probably killed thousands of people in New Orleans, the mayor said Wednesday - an estimate that, if accurate, would make the storm the nation's deadliest natural disaster since at least the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. "We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in the water," and other people dead in attics, Mayor Ray Nagin said. Asked how many, he said: "Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands."

I just watched a Texas official discussing a "renegade bus" that tried to drop off refugees from New Orleans. Apparently these refugees were not from the Superdome so they are considered illegitimate refugees who have no business at the Astrodome. They'll be provided with accommodations for an evening but then they'll have to find accommodations elsewhere. Apparently this is a little more than a PR move for Texas. Next they'll be sending their border patrol agents to stand guard at the Louisiana border to prevent illegal refugees (US citizens) from invading their state. Perhaps the governor of Texas will call out the National Guard to protect his state from the people of Louisiana who are in desperate need of food, water and shelter. Oh the freakin irony!

Aaron, Actually that renegade bus was eventually allowed to stay at the Astrodome. Where do you live? I live very close to the Houston Astrodome. So far, I have given money to the Red Cross, started a clothing/shoe drive @ my work for all people arriving at the Dome, and found a contract job for one displaced LA resident. However I'm scared to death of what's coming to Houston. I know there are many many good people who need help, but there are also many many BAD people who are going to be with them. I think its important to help those who need help, but we also have to look out for our own safety and make sure that the people coming into our city are not going to hurt or kill anyone. Cudos to our Texas Officials!
