New Harris Poll: Bush at Lowest Rating Ever

The Wall St. Journal (free article) has the results of a new Harris Poll. Bush is sinking faster than the Titanic.

President Bush's job approval ratings are at their lowest point of his presidency as only 40% of U.S. adults have a favorable opinion of his job performance and 58% have a negative opinion, according to a Harris Interactive poll.

This is a decline from two months ago, when the president's ratings were 45% positive and 55% negative. The war in Iraq and the economy climbed to the top of a list of issues Americans say are most important for the U.S. to address. Social Security declined sharply.

Cheney and Rumsfeld dropped as well.

Vice President Dick Cheney's approval ratings slipped to 35% from 38% in June, while Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's approval ratings dropped to 40% from 42%.

Cheney 35% Bush 40% Wow the top dog's numbers are even worse than the lap dog's numbers. I am still amazed they are that high, though.

The usual Talk Left trolls sure are silent on those stats!

My dad, an 81 year-old WW2 vet, told me a year ago that he didn't think the US public would not allow the US to fight a war anymore. It appears he may be right.

    er, stike the "not"...

    um, "strike." sigh...

You're on a roll today jackl, don't let me stop you.

Let's see: No WMDs No AQ connection Fewer freedoms in iraq and the USA No flowers, greeted as liberators, or statues to bushco "Weeks rather than months" has turned into years No democracy And bush lied, lied lied about all of the above. I guess you can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time ...

Hard to believe we are a mere nine months gone since Bush spoke about how much political capital he and how he would spend it. Now he just looks spent.

a lot of the poll numbers seem to have to do with the ever increasing price of gas it seems that each tick up in price means a downtick in bush poll numbers

By way of comparison: Nixon approval rating in the summer of 1973 (the height of Watergate): 39% Clinton on the day of his impeachment, 12/19/98: 72%, according to an NBC/WSJ poll. Meanwhile, ARG (American Research Group) has Bush's job approval at 36%, 4 points lower that the Harris poll cited on the front page. As a result of these numbers, I think the conventional wisdom needs to start reflecting reality. The idea that George Bush is a nice guy people want to have a beer with has to be put to rest. He is a deeply unpopular President.

Knew that, bush and business are the lowest rats to come down the old political road in 100 years. by the way the AQ Connection can be found in bush's family history and after all we all know about bush one and his political and money connection's with saddam. so maybe people are starting to put it together. where is bin laden? and why did bush say "we don't want him"..who is the we?

Et al – You guys are whistling past the graveyard. Bush has just endured a long hot summer of rising gasoline prices and continual pounding by the MSM. If this is the results of your best shots, 06 will be a Repub rout.

What a joke, the guy could kill his own mom and all the MSM would say is that icepick he used was un-american and that Clinton brought it into the house anyway. And that's as far as the story would go.

Yeah and most of those hits probably consisted her being swiftboated by Drudge and the Gang.

Johnny - If you are so obtuse that you don't know what the point is there is nothing that can be done. Ernesto - Come on, Ernie. You can do better than that. That so weak I'm LOL.

Jim. Welcome back, I kind of missed your insults. Reminds me of 4th grade. Without the crayons and whining. I got the point Jim. Make no mistake about it. But Rhinoceros Tanker is even MORE ignored than the Sheehan thing, and I don't see you making snarky remarks about that! Obtuse... LOL. An old man cranking around calling people obtuse. Man oh man... Does that make you acute? Actually the point was-you make snarky comments about the internet as a poor source of news, then back up a comment with... tada! An internet link! Wow! Is it a different internet you use? Anyways, enough troll bait for one day... Eat well Jim.

What's amazing is GWB doesn't even care. Still taking his month off to "get on with his life" and to "clear brush" stopping only to mouth his campaign speech to the VFW.

Johnny - Glad to know I was missed and I'll have you know I sat in the advanced section. You, obviously, did not. Oh well, enough insults.
But Rhinoceros Tanker is even MORE ignored than the Sheehan thing, and I don't see you making snarky remarks about that!
Glad to see you are elevating your logic and comments. Can't you keep up with us old men? The comment I made was that Sheehan has not been ignored. Far from it. And I didn't challenge the accuracy of the internet comments about her; I just referenced the raw numbers. You are capable of understanding the difference, aren't you? Come on youngster! You can do it! QIB - You are right. Thank goodness.

Quaker- Good point. Imagine what we would feel like if our country was occupied, its infrastructure destroyed to the extent that we had no basic services and enemy troops were killing our citizens on a daily basis. To top it off the President of that country was arrogant enough to announce that he wasn't to be bothered for five weeks because he was on holiday? That he had to live his life? How civilized.

As if it makes two bits of a difference what the polls say. Since 1994, the American public has been stupid enough to hand over the keys to big business -- and to allow the spectrum of our cultural discourse to be limited to the narrow spectrum of Corporate interest. Deficit spending ensures future federal/state/and County tax burdens on the middle class, that tax burden is being shifted more and more to that middle class, we're heading for a Real Estate collapse and rising interest rates at a time when consumer energy expenditures are skyrocketing, job creation is nil (shipped off to increasingly fascist India and China), and average income has barely matched inflation. Financial services consolidation ensures more and more dollars sucked from our pockets just to obtain the necessities of American life while our government takes away our legal protections -- you know, the ones that keep financially-uneducated people from hitting rock bottom and taking their many children along for the ride. Meanwhile our society is too stupid to notice little things like energy companies profit margins growing as fast as their revenues while the poor and uneducated have their children sacrificed in an immoral war over energy sources set to be depleted in 50 years. That's far from an exhaustive list. Media propaganda...civil liberties erosion...militarization.... Bush could have an actual 5% popularity rating and it would still take decades to undo the damage done over the past 11 years. That's assuming we'd ever get started working on it....

    TL, guess again
"President Bush's job approval ratings are at their lowest point ... only 40% of U.S. adults have a favorable opinion ... This is a decline from two months ago, when the president's ratings were 45%"
I took the time to look up the poll. Within the margin of error his approval may have actually gone up a point. Statistically insignificant.

PW-not to mention that the number you are using to indicate a uptick also has a margin of error.

I was wrong. After a rigorous check I found the difference to be significant, assuming the distributions are independent. I didn’t know the common sd was weighted by the joint sample size, which is large.

"06 will be a Repub rout." It grieves me to say it, but on this point I have to agree with Jim. And furthermore, I won't be surprised at all if Dubya remains in the White House after January 08. Really, would any of you be surprised?
