Six Feet Under Finale

John at Crooks and Liars says he was completely drained after the finale of HBO's Six Feet Under last night. Me too. I had been dreading the end of the series. I was very happy with last night's show, particularly with the way they tied up so many of the subplots and then gave us the futures of the characters. I won't go into detail, for those who haven't seen it, but if you did see it, tell us what you thought in the comments. [Note to those who do intend to view it: don't read the comments.]

I don't think I missed a single episode in its five year run (thanks to the episodes being replayed during the week and tivo.) It had one lackluster season - last year's - but Sunday nights just won't be the same without it. And now we have to wait until March, 2006 for the return of the Sopranos.

This had to be one of the best shows every aired and the finale was phenomenal! I just want to comment to those who wonder why other deaths weren't shown in th final sequence. To my knowledge, they only showed the deaths of those who started the show....you know, those who have been the main part of the show all years. At least that was the assumption I got from it. They didn't know Billy die, either, or Vanessa, or George, these characters - although important - were not the main characters of the whole series.

***SPOILER*** When Keith is gunned down in the future in that armored truck, my mouth dropped open. What a sad way to go. Also, did I miss something, or did they not reveal how George dies? Overall, a brilliant ending to a brilliant show. Now, only 7 months until another certain HBO show plans its funeral...

I was a very late addition to the viewing audience. My first episode was the one before Nate died, when he slept with Maggie and collapsed. I watched every one after that and now plan to buy the other seasons as soon as possible. During the behind the scenes special one of the producers pointed out that Americans see tens of thousands of simulated deaths by the time they turn 18, yet ironically remain remarkably unprepared for the reality of death. That is certainlky true of me. Do the people in my life know what they mean to me? Have I done all I could with this fleeting time? Sadly the answer is no on both counts. The show brought home to me how much work I have to do.

I couldn't sleep for most of last night mulling that episode over. I've never missed one for the run of the show. I have no idea why I was so affected, but the closing sequence was a tour de force. I think I was most taken by Claire, 98 and probably blind, having lived years beyond the rest of her family. I am consumed by the question of how her life went. George's death wasn't noted but I was happy that he was still with Ruth at her end. And I'm still wondering if his daughter had a child of Nate's. That scene at the doctor's office was tantalizing. All in all I am glad for the time I spent with the Fishers. Now I must await the return of The Wire, Deadwood and The L Word. Any idea if Rome will be good? Are the old networks (NBC, CBS, ABC) still relevant?

What were your favorite episodes? I too never missed a single one in 5 years. Loved it all, but especially these few which come to mind: Ruth on ecstasy, David at the breakfast meeting of independent funeral directors, the Rapture! death, Brenda and the "happy ending," the lady who sticks her head out of the limo, everything about Claire (great character, played with enormous truth and beauty), Billy the psycho--I'm going to miss them all.

What a great show! It was the most life affirming thing I've seen in a long time. When we accept mortality, we affirm life. As a bonus, Claire drives off in a Prius, and as a loyal Prius owner, it couldn't have been better

Whoa - slid right by that SPOILER alert! Whoo that was close. Yep, I agree last season was lackluster! But ohmigawd - this has been just too great! Sorry to see it end.

Six Feet Under Rocked! I believe many folks missed the point of the closing sequence. It begain with Claire trying to snap a photograph(on the front porch) of the family mambers she is leaving behind. Nate(ghost) tells her not to bother because they are already gone... the whole "road" sequence is Claire reminiscing as she dies alone in bed. The entire series is Claire musing about those few years of her young adulthood.
