Musicians Rocking Against the War

Green Day, Barbra Stresand and the Rolling Stones...all with new videos and songs highlighting the War in Iraq.

Veteran songstress Streisand and spiky-haired punk trio Green Day have surprisingly synchronized videos that tug at the heartstrings by showing troops in harm's way with lyrics about the lovers left behind on the home front. The Stones, meanwhile, veer into perhaps the band's most specifically political song ever.

...Politics is something the Stones typically haven't done at all. "Street Fighting Man," "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Undercover of the Night" had varying degrees of social or political imagery, but nothing like the new "Sweet Neo Con," a song from their upcoming album "A Bigger Bang," also due in September. The lyrics are pointed clearly at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., with its references to Halliburton and gasoline patriots. Among the lines: "It's liberty for all / Democracy's our style / Unless you are against us / Then it's prison without trial."

Keep 'em coming.

Update: You can listen to Sweet Neocon here, from Bartcop.

In addition, I'm noticing that I'm hearing more of the old anti-war songs and groups on the radio these days. Just today, I heard a cut from Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers" album.

"Green Day, Barbra Stresand and the Rolling Stones" - because the Pussycat Dolls were otherwise engaged and the Spice Girls didn't return calls. What is it with the arthritic left and sclerotic performers and anti-war stuff? -C

When the talent goes they need something to keep the crowds from listening to their music.

The Green Day guys are pretty young; only their sound is old.

roy - Are they actually a band? (I confess to listening to nothing but golden oldies and CD's.)

Yes, Jim. They are a band. With instruments and everything. For all the anti-peace wrong wingers out there, what's Toby Keith been up to lately?

Maybe they're old enough to know better. Such disrespect for our elders. Cliff you are L-7 baby. Totally square. You missed so much it's no wonder your such a hard a**. Oh well, maybe some day you'll see the light. I'm certainly no Streisand fan. And even though I prefer vintage R&B in my house I am off tomorrow to buy my first Green Day CD. I also have to pick up a copy of "Bridge of Sighs" 'cause I heard Too rolling Stoned on the radio today.

PPJ, yes, they're a band. Sort of punk-meets-emo. I don't think they're very original, they just execute a familiar formula, but they execute it well.

et al - Alas I shall remained uninformed about today's (and most of the past) musicians. Somehow I think music statrted going downhill when bands started naming themselves after bugs. I do feel a little sad for the Stones. They stayed away from politics for years and years only to use it now as a sort of Viagra of the performing arts.

DA - You are just soooo informative lately, first carpet eating and now the political songs of the RS. I am awed at your grasp of these two tremendouly complex and important subjects. Point remains. They were never known as a political band, now they are trying to get known as one. Reason? Talent aging.

Hmmm, my memory tells me that it was the Left that was known to have fellow travelers, and worse, in its midst. Joe M, you know, wasn't wrong in his contention, just in his numbers. Of course the Stones can look forward to a successful tour of playing hyped protest music to the great believers and uninformed. Daddy, can you spare me a hundred for a ticket?
