MoDo on Bush: Like Father, Like Son

Maureen Dowd reminisces about covering former President Bush's vacation in Kennebunkport just after he sent troops to the Persian Gulf:

How could President Bush be cavorting around on a long vacation with American troops struggling with a spiraling crisis in Iraq? Wasn't he worried that his vacation activities might send a frivolous signal at a time when he had put so many young Americans in harm's way? "I'm determined that life goes on," Mr. Bush said stubbornly.

That wasn't the son, believe it or not. It was the father - 15 years ago. I was in Kennebunkport then to cover the first President Bush's frenetic attempts to relax while reporters were pressing him about how he could be taking a month to play around when he had started sending American troops to the Persian Gulf only three days before.

.... "I just don't like taking questions on serious matters on my vacation," the usually good-natured Bush senior barked at reporters on the golf course. "So I hope you'll understand if I, when I'm recreating, will recreate." His hot-tempered oldest son, who was golfing with his father that day, was even more irritated. "Hey! Hey!" W. snapped at reporters asking questions on the first tee. "Can't you wait until we finish hitting, at least?"

Junior always had his priorities straight.

Bike on, Mr. President. [Via Atrios.]

Silly Kitt. Anyone who's not a blind liberal knows that Clinton was having S-E-X while our brave men and women were overseas. Good thing the Republicans are back in charge, eh?

Only MoDo (and the liberals) could look back at GWI and a call it a spiral. Unless I lost my way in her soporific prose and she was referring to this gulf war. Probably why I avert my eyes from her columns in my local paper. I can only take so much in the morning before the diet coke kicks in. -C

Well, maybe you shoulda reread this one after the diet coke. MoDo refers to a press op with Bush I three days after he began sending troops to the region. Up to that point, the crisis had indeed been "spiraling."

And who can forget: "I call upon all nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killers. Thank you. "Now, watch this drive!" Ranks right up there with "We have nothing to fear but fear itself!"

Glad she is back. Love the quip from the young(er) wippersnapper. I was not alway so keen about her until her recent op-ed memorial on her late mother. Her sympathy for Sheenan reflects her recent loss as does the piece TL mentions above. These respective fruits do not fall far from the trees.

Yeah. That's exactly how I feel about Bill O'Reilly (who also has a radio show and a cable show). Since we're digging out old stuff: All should be reminded...how to screw up. On September 14, 2001, at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., President Bush said, "War has been waged against us by stealth and deceit and murder. This nation is peaceful, but fierce when stirred to anger. This conflict was begun on the timing and terms of others. It will end in a way, and at an hour, of our choosing." ...now would be a good time to make a choice, Mr. President!

Imperialism is hard work! Two words: Slant drilling. Don't f**k with people and they won"t f**k with you. Pretty simple.

"So I hope you'll understand if I, when I'm recreating, will recreate."
They say Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Actually, he was only "recreating" too.

Darryl - I agree with you - never watch cable news now that I can scan the blogs (R&L) and get better bandwidth. Talk Radio? Yuck! -C
