Senate Lawyers Burning the Midnight Oil on Roberts

The Senate is in recess, but the Judiciary Committee lawyers are working through it, day and night, pouring over thousands of pages of released documents on Judge John Roberts to ready the Senators for the confirmation hearings that begin September 6. The Chicago Tribune has an informative article on what the staffers are doing and how the Senators have divided the work.

Specter's staff lawyers are readying talking points to combat negative information, not to be partisan, but to be fair. Cornyn's lawyers essentially admit their partisan role. Sen. Diane Feinstein will take the lead on Roe v. Wade, while Sen. Edward Kennedy will focus on civil rights issues.

Here's a clue to how it's going to go:

But so far, [Specter counsel] O'Neill said, Roberts' nomination "is somewhat of a disappointment." "He is such an outstanding candidate and so well qualified for this position," he said, that the lawyers don't have as much work as they expected.

Disingeneous point by O'Neil, If he wants work more hours and earn more $ hand over some of the docs the dems have requested. Zero to date, is the number produced by King George. Although his statement would most likely be the same if he had everything. Don't bite the hand..

Is there any doubt that he will be confirmed? The GOP has enough of a majority that the dems can't block Roberts. At least 2 of the wildcat 5 will vote for Roberts meaning the best the dems could do is a) filibuster and make the GOP enact the nuclear option, or b) win on a vote of at worst 52-48. While the process should go on to make sure there is no serious legal deficiency, the result seems certain, it's only a question of degree. The dems shold show restraint here. They can't win, they only make the process look partisan by making this a difficult process.

Big Tex- But, Bush is flaunting the separation of powers by refusing to hand over documents that Congress is entitled to review. I think letting that go, is too much to give up. WE may as well call him King George. Filibuster is the only responsible thing to do if the White House continues to stonewall congress.
