Ala. House Seeks Mandatory Castration for Sex Offenders

Sentencing Law and Policy reports on a new bill in Alabama that seeks mandatory castration for certain sex offenders. Here's the AP article.

The House passed a bill Thursday that would require mandatory castration of persons convicted of violent sex crimes against children under 12 and would require them to wear electronic monitoring devices for the rest of their lives after release from prison.

...A milder version of the legislation passed the Senate 35-0. The Senate version provides stiffer penalties for sex offenders, provides for electronic monitoring for at least 10 years and toughens requirements for them to report their location to police, but does not include the castration requirement or other tougher language added in the House.

....Either the House or Senate version must pass in the other chamber before the legislation can become law.

Will it involve anesthesia? If so, I know some doctors who should end up like J. Mengele.

Che, I think the bill is referring to chemical castration, which is done through injection, and is not permanent, it just gets rid of their sex drive, but once they stop getting their monthly shots it comes back. Several states use chemical castration as a means of punishment.

WOW. I should have known that. Thanks.

It would be gratifying to me if involuntary non-religious circumcision were classified as a violent sex crime, and circumcising physicians were tried and convicted under this bill, as amended to include surgical castration. The bill is sexist: no one would dream of performing surgery on convicted female criminals.

As always, since there is always a chance of innocent men being convicted, I can't support this measure. Life without parole for child molesters is enough, if they are later found innocent on appeal, their sex organs are not fiddled with. I get nervous when the govt. has the power to inject dangerous chemicals into a person.
