The CIA declined to discuss Plame's intelligence work, but an agency official disputed suggestions that she was a mere analyst whose public exposure would have little consequence.     Yet, until Robert Novak betrayed her, she was still undercover, and the company that was her front was still a secret to the world. When Novak outed Valerie he also compromised her company and every individual overseas who had been in contact with that company and with her.

    For the first time, a group of partisan political operatives publicly identified a CIA NOC.

    I can imagine the ridiculous, outrageous right-wing spin coming at this one already. It will be as pathetic as always. But it can never change the fact that this whitehouse, and all it's cronies, are the least patriotic group of people who have ever resided there.

    Bush I fired Rove from his re-election campaign for leaks made to Novak. Coincidence?

    In fact, the myth that the Intelligence Identities Protection Act was violated in the Plame case began to unravel in October 2003, when New York Times scribe Nicholas Kristof revealed that she abandoned her covert role a full nine years before the Novak column. "The C.I.A. suspected that Aldrich Ames had given [Plame's] name [along with those of other spies] to the Russians before his espionage arrest in 1994," reported Kristof. "So her undercover security was undermined at that time, and she was brought back to Washington for safety reasons." Kristof concluded: "All in all, I think the Democrats are engaging in hyperbole when they describe the White House as having put [Plame's] life in danger and destroyed her career; her days skulking along the back alleys of cities like Beirut and Algiers were already mostly over."

I wondered if you could tell us more specifically whether any of them told any reporter that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA? A: I spoke with those individuals, as I pointed out, and those individuals assured me they were not involved in this. And that's where it stands. Q: So none of them told any reporter that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA? A: They assured me that they were not involved in this. Q: They were not involved in what? A: The leaking of classified information.

    Previous RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie on MSNBC's Hardball, Sept. 30th, 2003: CHRIS MATTHEWS: Don't you think it's more serious than Watergate, when you think about it? RNC CHAIRMAN ED GILLESPIE: I think if the allegation is true, to reveal the identity of an undercover CIA operative -- it's abhorrent, and it should be a crime, and it is a crime. CHRIS MATTHEWS: It'd be worse than Watergate, wouldn't it? GILLESPIE: It's -- Yeah, I suppose in terms of the real world implications of it. It's not just politics.
