The much anticipated retirement announcement by Chief Justice Rehnquist has not materialized yet today.

Funny, both Drudge & RedState are announcing that it's pretty much official already. No word on Stevens yet, tho, other than that his health is deetriorating.

I've read several rumors today that Stevens is planning to resign, as well. I'm beginning to think we're getting just a bit twitchy on this. Let's keep our eyes on the ball. There is, as of yet, only one seat in play.

IMHO these rumors were planted by the Bush Administration to pressure the justices (note the roles of Novak and Drudge). If I were in the justices' shoes and saw these rumors in print, they would make me want to stay on as long as I could.

I liked Chief Justice Rehnquist's "That's for me to know and you to find out" quote as he got in his car.
