Rehnquist Retirement Announcement Friday Morning

Just got back from work and there are a bunch of emails from highly reliable organizations who say that Chief Justice Rehnquist will announce his retirement between 10 and 11:00 am Friday morning.

    I'm kind of wondering just how Fist and the repugs LOST in the filibuster fight when these extremists got in anyway? If Souter and Bader-Ginsberg have any love for their country, they'll stay in for three more sessions.

    Looks like Priscilla Owen and Miguel Estrada will both get in. A lot of people expect Ginsburg to retire soon, too, but y'know, I think it might be Souter who leaves before her. He has always stated that he wants to retire at 65 (he's 65 now, I think), and may not want to stick around on a court where he'll generally be in the minority and thus ineffectual. So I think he might go, too. I could see Bush using Gonzales as the replacement for Souter or Ginsburg, as he could prob not alienate his base so much if he did. And if Bush ends up making 3 or 4 appointments, the base will be satisfied if the other 2 or 3 are conservative. John Paul Stevens'll stick around, though, as long as he can. He seems to really love his work.

    (1) RAS: Two Texans does not seem likely, although the Court does now have two Arizonans (Rehnquist and O'Connor, not appointed at the same time). (2) Che: There is no one on the Supreme Court named "Bader-Ginsberg." Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg does not hyphenate her maiden and married names, and the latter is spelled with a "u" not an "e." I agree that much as Souter might like to retire to his cabin in the NH woods, his love of country and the law would seem to rule that out for a few years at least.

    Peter G, Good pt about both my predictions being Texans. Yes, Bush might choose to avoid that and go for more regional balance, tho who knows? Bush's picks may also be influenced by just how many appointments he makes. If it's only one for sure, he'll go conservative. But if he's gotten a heads-up on more retirements coming soon, he may leave himself room to add Gonzales to the mix, Texas and all. Rumors fly - the latest is that Stevens will announce his retirement tomorrow along w/Rehnquist - but Bush, Leahy et al simply know more than we do at this pt, and can adjust their longer-term strategies accordingly.

    How is it that a guy like George Bush gets all the luck when he's so evil, and people who bust ass all their lives and live humbly so that others may simply live get the shaft over and over again? It's a good thing I'm an atheist or else I'd be having a serious crisis of faith right now.
