CA. Prison Medical Takeover Possible

A federal judge in California is considering appointing a receiver to take over the state's prison medical system:

Saying "I can see myself appointing a receiver to stop 60-some people a year from dying," a judge indicated Tuesday that he's inclined to order a federal takeover of California's prison medical system.

The remark by Senior U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson came in response to expert testimony that poor health care is causing probably one to two preventable deaths per site per year" at the state's 32 penal institutions.

The expert concluded:

... 150 prison doctors are needed, and one-fourth to one-half of those currently working should be replaced.

From the post: "that poor health care is causing probably one to two preventable deaths per site per year" You could make the same claim about any group of citizens who don't have insurance, yet are paying taxes and trying to be useful and productive citizens. When can we get the ACLU to sue for them?

PPJ, you ask if "we" can get the ACLU to sue for the uninsured who are paying taxes and "trying to be useful...". Why don't you write them and see?

The difference is that these people are wards of the state and received prison terms, not death sentences.

wishful - I have done better than that. For years now I have periodically called my congress people urging them to pass laws to institute a single payer - that's socialized medicene to my buds on the Right - health insurance system that would cover everyone for everything. (Don't act surprised. I have always called myself a social liberal. Where I part company with the Demos is on national defense. I believe in it. They don't.)

Good, but it won't work in the end it will just be what it has always been.
