Dick Cheney Prevaricates on Guantanamo

How is it the Vice President of the United States can say things like this and not be laughed out of the television studio? On Larry King Live:

CHENEY:...And what we're doing down there has, I think, been done perfectly appropriately. I think these people have been well treated, treated humanely and decently.

Occasionally there are allegations of mistreatment. But if you trace those back, in nearly every case, it turns out to come from somebody who had been inside and been released by to their home country and now are peddling lies about how they were treated.

Crooks and Liars has the video and Here's What's Left has more thoughts on our disingenous Vice President..

Cheney is a professional liar and textbook sociopath, who thinks he knows what's best for all of us. But, and this is a big BUT...he's also a bully, a thug. And the mainstream press these days is so pretty and overpaid, a thug makes them cower like babies. I forget the name of the gentleman who finally dressed down McCarthy -- "Have you no decency, sir?" -- and think, wow, a Brit had the courage to do it the other day, but an American? Or, even more necessary, an American of notoriety? Not bloody likely.

Heh, I remember thinking during the VP debates... "Man, this guy is a great liar."

Dick Cheney: "For Amnesty International to suggest that somehow the United States is a violator of human rights, I frankly just don't take them seriously." We heard that quote from the Larry King Show taping yesterday on the radio and nearly drove the car off the road.

The decisions about treatment of the detainees - torture, by the way - came right from the top. Why else would Dubya have Alberto draft up the legal cover memo that these people can hide behind later. These are war criminals. History will be harsh towards them and their supporters and excusers.

When I read that news story I thought, "He sounds so much like an abusive family member." Who ya gonna believe? Me or the kid? The administration has set the game so that no matter who says what, the administration is right. Just like Wesley did to Vizzini: it didn't matter which cup Vizzini chose, the result had already been set up.

DP- excelent analogy. Cheney now says he was "offended". Gasp, the feelings of that cretin were hurt... To paraphrase a wise man from Missouri, "If you can't take the heat...maybe you should stop setting fires in the kitchen and blaming them on the media."

In Dadler's otherwise excellent description of Dick "Dick" Cheney, he forgot to mention that Cheney is a killer.

Thanks Dadler. Adept, I'm hoping that was Truman who made that statement - it would certainly have been apropo for him. A plot theorist could make an argument that - as resources and jobs dwindle and globalize - the rich people in every country are carving their niches now so that rather than rich and poor countries there will be an international group of oligarchs while the rest of us rot under the blazing sun. If my kid wasn't a possible victim of this I would possibly argue that we would be sleeping in the bed we made, and that the hens are coming home to roost, but I'm not that cynical yet

Of course the admin, under the guise of that leftwing group known as the Department of Defense, endorsed AI when they talked about other repressive regimes.
