Poll: 78% of Americans Oppose Rubber Stamping Judges

A new Associated Press poll shows that 78% of Americans believe judicial nominees should be scrutinized by Congress and do not think Presidents should be given the benefit of the doubt.

More than three-quarters of Americans say the Senate should aggressively examine federal judicial nominees and not just approve them because they are the president's choices.

That's one of the few aspects of this divisive issue that gets widespread agreement, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Friday....The poll found 78 percent believe the Senate should take an "assertive role" examining judicial nominees rather than just give the president the benefit of the doubt. There were majorities among each political affiliation - Democrats, Republicans and independents.

    What a deal. Ask a question that has no connection to the current discusssion and then tout the result. Shame on the AP, if that is possible. What's next? Do you favor sin? Think that might get a 85% plus "no?"

    I think a more appropriate question would be “Do you think a federal judge should be appointed given approval by a simple majority?” The question is so obviously rigged it’s hard to believe it came out of the AP. For the record I would be in the 15% of folks who favor sin.

    Actually, the question should have been "Do you think the Republicans are hypocrital thugs for trying to change the rules that protected their interests when they were in the minority?"

    And the MSGOP meme was this is only the result of extremists on the left and right and for most people it's only "inside the beltway" politics

    "I think a more appropriate question would be “Do you think a federal judge should be appointed given approval by a simple majority?” No, the question should be whether judges so far outside the mainstream of jurisprudence should have stong roadblocks put in the way of their appointment to lifetime positions? Or here's a cream puff: Should the legislative and executive branches be able to shape the judiciary able according to the most extreme political positions de jour?
