just an observation...out here on west coast, Bank of America is running a commercial with the violin music from Lou Reed's "Street Hassle". This a song about a girlfriend dieing (OD) and dragging her out in the street and letting her get hit by a car (just another hit & run)..not too mention other Lou Reed darknesses. Gee I think I'll open a checking account.

I’ve got the UK elections on my mind. I was in London a couple of weeks ago for a conference. One of the speakers (English) ended his presentation by deriding the preemptive US invasion of Iraq. Later I asked him if he meant UK; I still don’t think he understood my point. It was bizarre for me to see the English so bent out of shape about the ‘US invasion’ and the reelection of GWB. I guess we’ll see if the irony has taken hold after their elections. However, I’m predicting a sound victory for TB; thousands of miles and 2+ centuries, and still a bizarrely parallel corpus politico.

Even better, speaking of raunchy cheerleaders and uptight school systems. School bans the playing of Louie Louie LOL. I guess they haven't heard the real lyrics. I think I'll fax them to the Supt. right now!

And the hits just keep acomin!
KABUL, Afghanistan - The United Nations sounded an alarm for women's rights in Afghanistan on Thursday after three young Afghan women were found raped, hanged and dumped on a roadside with a warning not to work for foreign relief organizations... ...The bodies of the women were found Sunday in Baghlan province, 120 miles north of Kabul, and officials and doctors said they had been raped and hanged. A note found with the bodies said they were killed for working for international aid groups.

Sexual predator? Man has sex with 14 year old, declared innocent. Most of Europe, according to this attached story has the age of consent between 14-16, I wonder if that has much to do with incarceration totals... link

Does the capture of Abu Farraj al-Libbi even register in the world of TL?

"Does the capture of Abu Farraj al-Libbi even register in the world of TL?" That smells like a Doctor Ace comment. The answer is... Sure, capturing someone that is allegedly the #3 guy (or whatever) over at Al Qaeda might make a difference (somewhere). That is, if any of that is true. But assuming it is all correct, I'd say that it "registers" with me about as much as it "registers" with Conservatives that (1) no WMD have been found to justify the invasion of Iraq, (2) that American soldiers have tortured prisoners during the occupation of a foreign land, and (3) there has been no "smoking gun" correlation found between Iraq, Sadaam Hussein, and 9/11 despite all of the incessant lies and half-truths spread by our politicians and our media for 2 years between 2001 and 2003. ...but none of that "registers" with you, does it..."Sarcastic Un-named one"...

TS - You know, there is something amiss when someone can't be happy that we have captured the number 3 man in the organization that attacked us on 9/11 and killed about 3000 Americans. What it says is that there is no room for discussion, debate or comprimise. Sad.

I guess Tampa Student hasn't seen a newspaper in a while because he is saying the same thing he's been saying for the last year. Must be studying for finals. ;) I see that Bolton got a couple of pretty interesting endorsements today which would seem to make his conformation more likely to go through. I think he'll be a good choice in a Moyhnahan-ish kind of way.

Jimcee: Well, you see for me Jimcee, foreign policy isn't something to talk about over the watercooler as casually as a Sporting event, forgotten about with the next days headlines. Why the hell am I supposed to believe what the media says about anything? The media willfully perpetuated a pretty damn big lie for two years. Pardon me if I'm uninterested in what is written by fishwrap journalists and pundits about runaway brides. Unimaginative, biased newspapers taking AP/Reuters stories and adding biased context and backstory in between the paragraphs. People are whatever the government and the media decides to label them as. Mujahadin, Taliban, Rogue-State Du Jour. Uh huh, free elections, yeah right. In the past 72 hours, I've read through and written a massive amount of information -- I scarcely have time to waste brain power absorbing the garbage that the mainstream media sells as truth. What it says is that there is no room for discussion, debate or comprimise. This coming from somebody that approves of the elimination of the last vestige of meaningful dissent available to the "minority party" of Congress. Compromise. Social Darwinists only believe in compromise when they have their opponents on their knees.

Unmitigated truth from Tampa Student. Keep at it, friend: end of semester in sight! BTW I still find myself surprised from time to time by how low the media in this country really will go. Thoigh really its more a question of how low we're all willing to go. They only give us what we want, apparently.

glanton - So you also have nothing good to say? Sad. Whatever your position on the war, I don't see why you shouldn't be happy about this.

Re: Thursday Open Thread (none / 0) (#17)
by glanton on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 12:58:46 PM EST
Jim, I'm agreeing with TS's post about the media, which has been so unbelievably irresponsible throughout these wars that when it comes to information, I don't know what or whom to trust anymore: that's the honest truth. But I will reiterate what TS said, and said, I thought, quite well. If indeed one of those responsible for 9/11 and other terrorist attacks has been apprehended, then I am thrilled that such a threat has been removed from our midst.

Che - What will change, you ask? That's not the point. Something good happened. Why not enjoy that? Why not say, that's good guys. Glanton - Okay. I still find it amazing that no comments, except me, that the capture was good.

Anytime a murderer gets caught, that's a good thing. Personally, I feel my way of life is more threatened by the mooks in Washington than by Islamic crazies, so excuse me if I don't jump for joy. When somebody arrests Bush and Bin Ladin on the same day, then I'll jump for joy.

Tampa Student, Ya know, my comment - on an open thread mind you - really was directed at TL, not TS. I'm not sure why you took it so personally. I am sincere when I say this: I do hope that with all the education you're getting, you get some wisdom as well.
