Charles and Camilla: Married at Last

I've never been crazy about Prince Charles, but Camilla Parker-Bowles has stuck by him through thick and thin.

And she looked glorious today. Congratulations to both of them. The wedding went off without a hitch - they earned this.

The happy couple:

But what is the deal with the English and hats?

Camilla's daughter

Charles and Diana were divorced. Any compliant, even beyond the grave, by an ex-wife (or ex-husband) against a remarriage is totally bogus, even if their marriage was ended by infidelity with the new spouse.

I liked Princess Diana too. Especially her contributions. The night of her death I wrote an article about her, which later was published in Women of Colorado. It's no longer online, but it began:
The Princess of Wales died this evening. Mostly I remember her contributions and her humanitarianism. She went to Bosnia and Angola to protest land mines. She was photographed shaking hands with an AiIDS patient. She visited sick children around the world. Even after her divorce from Prince Charles, she continued her contributions - to the Red Cross and other charities, particularly those dedicated to helping the sick and the young. Outpourings of shock and sympathy were received tonight from heads of state the world over - particularly for her young children. Young and vibrant, the Princess clearly made her mark on the world. She was adored in Great Britain - and she will be eulogized for many years to come. I heard a newscaster say tonight that Princess Diana often said she wanted to be remembered as the "Queen of People’s Hearts." I have no doubt she will be. Will the rest of us be so fortunate? ...I wonder what made so young a woman realize the gratification she would feel from making contributions to others instead of just being on the receiving end? This is the lesson I hope her untimely passing bestows upon the rest of us.

My guess: if QEII holds on a few more years, when she steps down or dies Charles will immediately abdicate in favor of his son. Who with any luck will be prepared to do a much better job. Cranky

A total nonstory. What's to applaud about? How did they "earn" this? By being so cowardly as to deny their romance and as a consequence, driving a young woman nearly crazy? There's no romance here, only a tired story of "stiff upper lip" British royal stupidity.

Well jazmine - on the nose. This is one couple I totally don't care a whit about. However, I did see a picture on Reuters when their home page came up earlier and thought Charles actually looks happy. My only observation.

Yes jazmine and kitt. The death of Diana really tore me up. The waste of such beauty, grace, caring, and service broke my heart. I hated the papparazzi who caused her death and hated the queen for how she treated her. How that woman can live with herself after she caused such pain to her son, by not allowing his marriage to Camilla and now changing her mind, is beyond despicable. Guess I better stop now. Guess you can see this topic really saddens me.

Yeah, too bad Diana couldn't be there. It would have been nice if Charles had hanged himself after having her assassinated for threatening to marry an Arab. He and OJ ought to get together, have drinks...of cyanide. As for Camilla -- she can be QUEEN? Might as well haul Churchill out of his grave and drive nails into his corpse. Hey, that's an idea -- now that they are married, they can honeymoon in a Nazi march. Let's see...Bush will be in Nome on his Sell Refrigerators to the Eskimos Tour...that's close enough. 'Heh, heh, that global warm, er, warmering, er warmonging...well, you're going to need these refers, trust me. Oh, did I say reefer? I meant cocaine. No, I mean, I meant refrikerators, refugerators, you know, the thing you keep your neighbor's urine in so you can pass the test. That thing.'

Why do the Brits put up with this bunch of blood sucking leeches that do nothing to earn a living? Dysfunctional with a capital D. People in England scraping by to make a living and this clan of do nothings raking in the cash. Gilbert Gotfried said it best on the tonight show last week: "A middle aged mommas boy who hasn't worked a day in his life".

Now, now. Compared to the rest of the crowd, Camilla's hat was only of average ugliness. Kinsley had a rather sweet essay about the wedding in the Washington Post.

"Leave it to liberals and democrats to love a mistress." You got that right! Just like Jesus or maybe you don't remember the Woman at the Well, or the one who annoited Jesus' feet or the one they tried to stone. We all loved Diana. As with any of us there are other parts to the story. Go check out: [link deleted, not in html format] C&C are almost 60 years old. I wish them well - they seem happy.

TL--This is a nonstory, as a Country that fought a war to get rid of the notion that some people are ordained by God to rule over others, we should ignore these rather dim people who really have taken much more from society than they have contributed (Diana included for all you Diana worshippers). They are the last vestiges of a system that was at least partially responsible for the debacles of the twentieth century and should have been kicked out of power with the rest of the royal families of Europe at the end of World War I.

I am from the uk and i agree to the bigger part that the majority of the royals have no use and should earn their own way, i do feel the need to point out that the royal household employes thousands of people and earn millioms of pounds each year through tourism. As to the hat please accept my appoligises from this nation to yours it is dredful! Maybe a bit lower with the brim?

The father of the child who dressed up as a Nazi for 'a laugh' marries his mistress, and ponders being a king. Since the Royal Family clearly needs a new starting point, I should like to nominate: Mr. R. Herring Fishcote Industries Cod House 5, Fishy Lane Eastfish Gate Fishborough Ealex FI25 1CO and family, of course. The Herring family are not cheap, and most importantly they aren't cheeky. Cheeky royals are the worst.

I was curious about more details about the designer of the dress into which Camilla Parker-Bowles changed for the religious blessing ceremony and found that the Prince of Wales's own government web site here contains more detailed information than we got from commentators on CNN, e.g. (Obviously, this is posted only for people who are actually interested in the event. Downloadable press kit is accessible there.) I liked both of her outfits, esp. the cream/oyster dress coat and that matching hat and the way her hair was done. (By the time she got to Balmoral, it seemed back to normal!) But I thought the second hat was rather weird and unweildy (at least in video and photos; maybe in real life it looked more appropriate). On tv, it looked like a bird with nest intact had alighted on her head and then left it there. She seemed to find it uncomfortable in the wind, as it was about to take off with every gust it seemed. Otherwise, she looked quite elegant, imo. One commentator said that Camilla had lost about "a stone" (about 14 pounds) for the wedding, reminding me of the very sad history of the late Diana, Princess of Wales's bulimia. Even the more physically- and psychically-sturdy Camilla is apparently not immune to weight-consciousness for her marriage. But she looked quite healthier and happier as a lighter lady. Apparently, she doesn't suffer from the low self-esteem problems that her younger predecessor did. (It was interesting to listen to Jane Fonda's perspective on her own battle with bulimina the other night on Larry King Live.)

Oh, give me a break. What are these, "I wish them well." comments all about? We wouldn't give a care in the world if Prince Charles was a normal man, but as he is next to the throne, he's undertaking a huge responsibility which requires one to be honest - as he obviousely isn't. The onyl reasonable thing to do is to renounce the throne and live somewhere else where C & C can have all the happiness they want... and not at the expense of others.

I must say, they are perfect for one another. An adulterer with another cheating sleazebag. If Charles REALLY did love Camilla in the past, he would have gone ahead and married her - going against all odds to wed the woman he loved. But no, all he did was use Princess Diana as a baby-making machine, meanwhile having little trysts with Cowmilla. It's really very disappointing how Prince Charles could have such a weak will.

The only reason people loved Diana was that she was physically beautiful. Poor Charles, married to that neurotic Baribie doll. I'm glad he and Camilla are finally together - yes Camilla is plain and middle aged, but she is real, warm, substantive.

I totally agree with Gilda. The reasons for the public's adoration of Diana were her glamorous looks, which contributed to her image as a fairy-tale,almost Disney-like character, complete with shiny blonde hair, etc. The public's shallow preoccupation with looks was also the reason they resented Charles for divorcing Diana and carrying on with the plain Camilla. They felt that boring, eccentric and "square" Charles had no right to discard "goddess" Diana. However,he had every right to leave an unhappy,ARRANGED marriage, not based on any common interests, compatibility or mutual understanding. He was a victim, too! In fact,I've read that Diana wanted to be Queen so much, that she endeared herself to him by pretending to share his interests and outlooks---thus,the marriage was of CONVENIENCE to HER.

To continue...I don't believe that Diana was a victim to the extent portrayed by some:she wanted to be married to Charles for ambitious reasons. She certainly fell victim to her own machinations, when their result was a miserable marriage based on dishonesty and misunderstanding(Charles was shocked to discover that Diana was a completely different person!).However distasteful in some respects Charles' courtship of Camilla was,he is now with the woman he loves and with whom he is much more compatible(desiring to be a "tampon" says something of his passion for her!).He certainly looks a lot happier with Camilla than with Diana--there is a glow about him and genuine pleasure in her company.Good luck to them both!
