Hunter Thompson's Ashes Set for August Cannon Blast

Hunter Thompson's widow, Anita Thompson, made the news official today: Hunter's ashes will be blasted from a cannon in August, as he wanted:

Hunter S. Thompson's ashes will be blasted from a cannon mounted inside a 53-foot-high sculpture of the journalist's "gonzo fist" emblem, his wife said Tuesday. The cannon shot, planned sometime in August on the grounds of his Aspen-area home, will fulfill the writer's long-cherished wish.

"It's expensive, but worth every penny," Anita Thompson said. "I'd like to have several explosions. He loved explosions."

More details:

She said the gonzo fist will be mounted on a 100-foot pillar, making the monument 153 feet high. It will resemble Thompson's personal symbol, a fist on an upthrust forearm, sometimes with "Gonzo" emblazoned across it.

I hope information about the bore of the cannon and amount of powder used will be forthcoming.

What an incredible opportunity for us to descend upon Aspen this summer to celebrate Thompson's contributions and organize the tip of the spear of resistance to the downward spiral our society is taking, led by George W. Bush and his murderous thugs. A man that Thompson thought was WORSE THAN NIXON. Aspen is perfect: It's centrally located It's warm in August Lots of space There needs to be a sentinel event to galvanize resistance to the atrocity in Iraq and the fascism that is running rampant in our country. There can be no complacency this time. We are not the German people of 1938. It's time.

"Who really understood what that cheap demented little fascist punk had in mind for his four more years? It involved the systematic destruction of everything this country claims to stand for, except the rights of the rich to put saddles on the backs of the poor and use public funds to build jails for anybody who complained about it." HST on Nixon's '72 landslide victory, but It also applies to recent events.

HST, a god among men, even in death. His mind shall be missed.

    I'm down Che.

    Very small bore, Scar

My speculation is that HST's ashes will be included as a "payload" in a class B fireworks shell, probably anywhere from 10 - 16 inches in diameter. This will be shot from a mortar tube, euphemistically called a "cannon", implanted in the sculpture as described above. If the pyrotechs that construct this shell are worth their salt, there will be an impressive report (aka BOOM!) that will accompany a spectacular color burst lighting up the Colorado night sky. As a pyrotech AND a longtime HST fan, I wish I could be there to see and hear it. Also, I am in total agreement with "Che" and "Jay". ~ Roadie Ric
