Meet Vernon - the First Death Row Blogger

Blogging has arrived at death row. Meet Vernon is the first weblog written by a death row inmate.

Here's how it works, according to the sites creator, Virginia Simmons:

Vernon Lee Evans, is the next person to be executed on Maryland’s death row. You can write Vernon a question using the link at the top of the screen or by writing an email directly to MeetVernon@GMail.com . I will print out the emails and mail them to Vernon who is currently in a maximum security cell in Baltimore, Maryland. Vernon will mail me back his responses and I’ll post them here.

Vernon was supposed to be executed this month but very recently got a stay of execution. You can read about his case here, and sign a petition to save his life. Read Vernon's description of a typical day on death row.

Meet Vernon even has a blogroll, and TalkLeft is proud to be included on it. This is an experiment, but wouldn't it be great to see every death row inmate with a blog?

Here's a list of currently scheduled executions for the remainder of 2005. Also check out these excellent blogs: Abolish the Death Penalty by David Elliott of NCADP and the Lonely Abolitionist.

Update: More discussion about why death row inmates should have blogs.

Every convicted murderer should have a blog the day their victims have a voice too. They shouldn't be granted any more rights than those they freely took away from someone else.

Victims already have a voice and can start a blog any time they want. I'm glad to see that makes you agree death row inmates can have a blog now too.

What a great idea! It benefits all of us to get to know a person who is going to be killed in our name. This site is for a Texas Deathrow inmate named Bobby Fratta. You can write Bobby at: Robert Fratta 999189 Polunsky Unit 3872 FM 350 S. Livingston, TX 77351 I hope some of you will. Bobby's brother in law is Randall Adams, once on Texas Death Row himself.

Wow, murder victims can speak? What is your definition of murder?

if the death penalty is a deterrent(?), wouldn't it be more valuable to have examples of the true consequences and how they affect the individual?

I too have something set up to help Bobby Fratta (who some of you might have seen on A&E's American Justice last night). You can go to www.fight4bobby.blogspot.com. I will get any and all comments and questions to him.

...wouldn't it be great to see every death row inmate with a blog? Hmm. We would need to rethink the definition of "perma-link". And what would be the etiquette for updating the blogroll?

You've incurred the wrath of Michelle and Jesse Malkin! How dare you express "pride" in being included in that blogroll. The Malkins should be ashamed.

The pride is that a death row inmate (or as is obviously more likely the case, his lawyer, since death row inmates don't have direct access to the internet) thinks TalkLeft is a site that protects and fights for the rights of the accused, including those on death row.

I will be proud once a murder victim puts me in their blogroll. Because murder victims can blog anytime they want, right, Ms. Merritt?

"TalkLeft is a site that protects and fights for the rights of the accused, including those on death row." Uh, they are not really the "accused" if they are on death row, they are the convicted.

We live in the free West where we are always fighting for the right to free speech. Isn't that right to all in the west, whether we agree with them or not. To say inmates don't have the right to free speech is a very dangerous prospect, you are saying they are not free to say what they feel or think, hey lets stop all appeals and any thought of wrongful conviction because it will, and never has happened.

I have been desperately looking for 3 days for an inmate that can somehow use the computer to read my email to him. Please help me.
