Poll: Support Drops for Tom Delay in Texas

The Houston Chronicle reports on a new poll showing a drop in support for Texas Congressman Tom Delay.

In the Chronicle poll, conducted late last week and published Sunday, nearly 40 percent of 501 likely voters in his district said their opinion of DeLay is less favorable than last year, compared with 11 percent who said their view of him has improved.

Delay aides try to spin it, but it seems clear that Delay's self-insertion into the Terri Schiavo case hurt him badly:

Nearly 69 percent of people in the poll, including substantial majorities of Democrats and Republicans, said they opposed the government's intervention in the case.

Nearly 58 percent were critical of DeLay's leading role in spurring Congress to pass a special law to get a federal court review of Schiavo's parents' attempts to have her feeding tube kept in place.

Campaign for America's Future has developed a major tv ad campaign to take down Delay.

People's Republic of Seabrook , a Texas blog, comments on the poll, noting:

My Congressional district may finally be waking up to the reality that Tom DeLay has no clothes...and isn't THAT a profoundly disturbing
mental picture??

Wouldn't it be great to see hundreds of thousands of fundies out there mourning the political death of the Bugman, that revolting "human being"?

I think that, though the seeds of its destruction were planted a few years ago, that with this unbelievable congressional action against the public interest combined with the coziness that DeLay is trying to show at the same time he's being exposed, that the religious right may be on its way back to the fringes where it belongs. I strongly believe that the Democrats' good showing here was due in large part to the meddling that DeLay engaged in when he orchestrated out little gerrymander for us. When DeLay sent in the troops, it elevated the visibility of the sort of lunatic fringe that was running the state government--types like John Andrews, who was far more interested in perpetrating the gerrymander and mandating school prayer than he was in making sure that roads get built and fixing public education. Washington insiders "in the know" say that DeLay will just get all fired up under the pressure and that's when he does his best politicking. I say to the Dems and the several R's that want DeLay out to keep the pressure on, because when he's in rare form he seems to do the most damage to himself and the religious right. And they don't need to feel guilty about it, either. I mean gimme a break, this guy makes Jim Wright look like Jesus Christ. And to DeLay, I say keep them favors comin'!

DeLay's comparison of the "out of control" judiciary killing Terri Shiavo to the same leftist conspiracy "out to get him" was a maze of logic even the most fervent supporter has to question (PPJ - up for a DeLay defense?). I've been waiting since 1980 for this reactionary gang of profiteers to self-implode. Let's hope that DeLay's demise gives us as much hope for our country's continued sanity as the Judiciary's defense of Terri Shiavo's rights.

Oh but we're Americans. Give us six months and we'll forget all about it. By then, it'll be "Terri who?"
