Ferrer Hurt By Diallo Comments

by TChris

Fernando Ferrer, the current front-runner in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, may have been going after the "law and order" vote when he made comments about the Amadou Diallo case that are difficult to justify. (Background on the Diallo case is here.) That strategy appears to have backfired as polls show a four point drop in voter support, including an eleven point drop among African American voters.

Ferrer, a vocal critic of NYPD policies during the Giuliani administration, startled black leaders by telling a police group on March 15 that there was an effort to "over-indict" the cops who shot and killed Diallo and that the shooting wasn't a crime.

Great! I hear Mark Furman is looking for a new police dept. LAPD was just too touchy-feely.

kdog wrote in the background - "and a cop asks me to stop, it is within my rights to ignore him. If he has a warrant he can arrest or probable cause I committed a crime, he can arrest me." And to do so he must tell you to stop. And if you run, then reach into your pocket and pull out what he thinks is a weapon, you'll get shot and have a rich widow. BTW - I believe the police identified themselves by yelling "Police." Whether or not Diallo understood is another question.

PPJ, WTF are you talking about? Diallo didn't run, 4 cops from the Street Crimes Unit (since disbanded due to all the lawsuits)came to his house looking for a rape suspect. When he reached for his wallet they shot at him 41 times, hitting him 19. I can understand your confusion, it's hard to keep straight all the murders cops commit.

Thank you sailor. I keep getting you confused with "Soldier".
    Was anything he said incorrect?
Not if you think cops should have unlimited power and be immune to prosecution, anonymous dum dum.

Using my rantings to justify a murder PPJ. If I recall, that comment was on a post about a man in AZ I believe being arrested for refusing to produce identification. A different situation than Diallo. Call me a race baiter, but if Diallo was white he'd be alive. Simple fact. You don't live in NY PPJ, I do. I know the NYPD all to well, and how they do business. Those bastards murdered that poor man, justify it as you wish, just keep me out of it.

mfox, I don't know who is going to be more insulted, me or 'Soldier';-) To help keep it straight, 'sailor' is indicative of my hobby. If 'soldier' is indicative of his hobby we gots worse problems;-)

Since NYC politics are not exactly off topic, Ferrer's plan that nobody has to feed meters on Sunday, is a blatant subsidy to NYC's extremely small car-owning population, and also doesn't take other faiths into consideration. It'll also hurt local businesses and starve the city of revenue, simply to pander to some imagined constituency of religious people who drive to church.

I tell my children and their friends that if a policeman stops them, they are to ask the first question: Am I being detained (terry stop)? If the answer is no, walk away. Don't answer any questions unless the answer to the Terry question is yes. Then only answer as little as possible, produce identification and ask the second question: where is my attorney? I need to speak to my attorney now. It's a shame that I feel I need to give that advice, but some of my children are black and reaching for your wallet to provide identification can be lethal to black folks as Mr. Diallo's case shows. Police have no right to expect answers to any questions unless they are detaining you. If they are detaining you, you have right to counsel. Exercise the right.
