Stupid Person of the Week

by TChris

The remedy for disliked speech is more speech, not a pie in the face.

William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard and former chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle, was splattered by a student during a speech about U.S. foreign policy at Earlham College Tuesday. Members of the audience jeered the student, then applauded as Kristol wiped the pie from his face and said, "Just let me finish this point," the Palladium-Item reported

Earlham suspended the dissenter for his childish behavior.

Re: Stupid Person of the Week (none / 0) (#4)

Is he stupid for throwing the pie and causing a disturbance, or is he stupid for not taking stronger action to shut the speaker up? I think Ward Connely would think the latter.

by glanton on Wed Mar 30, 2005 at 07:21:00 PM EST
Actually, he's stupid for having wasted his time going to see Kristol speak at all. I'd rather go to a John Cage concert.....more would get said.

Foreign policy? pie in the face! childish but normal. but the line"let me finish my point is really great. criminal governments always act like this.

    Who's John Cage?

Re: Stupid Person of the Week (none / 0) (#8)
by glanton on Wed Mar 30, 2005 at 08:07:21 PM EST
Kitt: If I'm not mistaken (this is from short term deficient memory, someone help me out here if I flubbed the name) Cage is one of those musicians who takes the stage, sits in front of a piano, and then just sits there and sits there. Supposedly, it is the shuffling of the audience as they figure out what's going on that forms the music. Finally people get up and start leaving. Very bizarre, even opaque.

Re: Stupid Person of the Week (none / 0) (#9)
by glanton on Wed Mar 30, 2005 at 08:16:52 PM EST
Yeah, I just googled Cage, I named the right guy, he did actual songs too, but I always remembered him for the silent ones. Check out some of the really informative and interesting websites that come up whern you type "John Cage" + "Music."

Bah. More props to the guy for pieing the guy in the face. While I'm sure some yuppies will twaddle on about how wrong this is, so on and so forth, some of us don't feel the intense desire to be boring as hell with our politics. Does it really hurt to get pied? No. Is it childish? Possibly. But then again I don't see CNN calling up anti-war activists and other peace minded people to talk to the same size audience that many conservative and middle of the road liberals get. So spare me the santicmonious crap about the misfortune of him getting pied in the face. When those who own the media and the methods of dissemination in our society decide to let people come on and speak, I'll start disapproving of mildly amusing pranks like this. Time to go back to making more pies...

Childish? Maybe. But not even REMOTELY as serious as the actions described just three posts below, in which Americans right to freedom to listen (not even to speak!) was denied by official (whether Secret Service or Republican Party) action, something which is happening REPEATEDLY (every few days if the truth were fully known).

Usually the "pies" are nothing more than whip cream quickly sprayed on a cheap disposable plate. If you're quick enough you can spray enough whip cream and launch before anyone even realizes the strange hissing noise going on.

I believe it was Perle who said he wouldn't change anything about the Iraq revolution who then had to duck a shoe irate enough about mass murder to shout "MF LIAR!" as well. Bill Kristol is up to his eyeballs in the blood of innocent people. For attempting to shame such a malfeasant human being and QED racist, TChris calls the person 'stupid.' Well, I suppose so, if to TChris the Iraqis themselves are 'childish' to contend over the future of their families and communities. Harmless acts, compared to incredibly harmful, vicious acts. Hmm, which ones to blame?

Paul. The Iraqi contention you're talking about; is it the arguing in the parliament, or is it the murder of civilians by Baathists? You need to be clearer.

Gerry, the idea of any public figure, particuarly politicians, kicking someone out because they might be lampooned, or ::GASP:: even pie is disturbing, because hell, I PAY their salaries. If I wanted to walk straight into their office and tell them what for I should be able to.

Re: Stupid Person of the Week (none / 0) (#27)
by kdog on Thu Mar 31, 2005 at 01:09:34 PM EST
I don't think so Gerry, unless new gov't policy is pre-emptive ejection from public forums for the potential possesion and use of weapons of mass dessert. It's a prank, the pie to the face is the oldest gag in the book. Soldier...I simply meant throwing pies at those you disagree with is better than shooting them. If the "weapon of the left" is pies, sure beats guns.

ROTFLMFAO!!! You all are so funny I'm literally typing with tears in my eyes. Soldier, I really like our discourse - it's a pleasure to read your obviously sincere opinions even though we may disagree. Last night I was thinking about our exchanges and feeling like we've established more dialog and consensus than the Senate and Congress together!

I feel the same way, mfox. Disagreement should make a conversation interesting, not cantankerous. Sadly, it is easy to have a better dialog than our Senate and House. Too often, both sides act more like professional wrestlers, playing to their fans, rathan than adult, elected officials.

HAHA! LIberals can only get noticed when they pie someone in the face because they can bring no ideas to the table. Next dinner party I'll look to the republicans for conversation and the liberals for the dessert.

Re: Stupid Person of the Week (none / 0) (#39)
by Talkleft Visitor on Fri Apr 01, 2005 at 11:39:11 AM EST
mfox, So what *you're* saying is that it's NOT wrong, and that it SHOULD be encouraged. It may not be ruining the country, but it's childish. If you want to be taken seriously, maybe actually try to seriously debate your ideas (and no, namecalling does not count as debate). Good luck with that.

Well, I suppose so, if to TChris the Iraqis themselves are 'childish' to contend over the future of their families and communities." If we measure this against the war: ex: "What's a pie compared to 10,000 Iraqi dead?" what justification doesn't work? "Of course I set off that naplam cannister on Kristol, he started the war! It killed 10 people who tried to put him out, but it's his fault, because he started the war! Then...the fire got out of control and...that put the body count at 10,011, and, like...there was only 10,000 Iraqi dead. Dude, I was so wrong." Let's encourage each other to act like grown-ups. It may be boring, but you stand a chance of actually convincing someone that you are right.

Fair enough. I don't support pieing per se, but can't I have a short list of people I'd like to pie? If the childish urge to do something harmless makes me one of the bad guys, or if I refuse to get all offended and huffy I suppose you could invalidate every opinion I have. Right now, my top pie candidates are Jesse Jackson and Tom DeLay - preferably with a Florida Key Lime pie! Fred, I try not to name-call, though I am the subject of such daily. Did I call anyone names here?

I think it's great. As a Reagan-Conservative Bill Kristol is not representative of true conservative values. He, like Newt, plays the middleman card in frequently attacking Bush in order to appear more creditable the next time he attacks Democrats. No one with a sliver of a brain is fooled by the dishonest approach to opinionated journalism. His "contributions" are laughable at best. And that's the risk you run when you play that game; true conservatives won't be there to lend support and obviously liberals won't do the same. I mean, it's a win-win situation for conservatives: 1) America needs to see more of the liberal antics of intolerance and vitriolic hatred and 2) Opportunistic "neo-cons" get a taste of humble pie, no pun intended.

Paul. I get it now. But no problem. We are all subject to Freudian s***s --slips, I mean slips--from time to time. Not my line. Heard it from a behavioral psych prof--who probably used it every semester. Also, it's nice to see a lefty trying to be convincing in pretending concern for the troops. Keep it up. There may come a time when you are able to fool as many as one people.

You really want to associate yourselves with supporting this kind of behaviour? The next step is probably the guy shows up with a gun instead of a pie. Its assault, and its stupid and wrong.
