Juveniles on Death Row Express Relief

There are 11 juvenile offenders on death row in Harris County, Texas (Houston.) The Houston Chronicle interviewed several about their feelings on the Supreme Court decision barring their execution. Bottom line: They are relieved, but not celebrating.

If you are old enough to kill, you are old enough to die.

There was a story on NPR yesterday (Weekend Edition) revisiting a woman (Pam Withrow) who was warden of the Michigan State Reformatory, which is now closed. One of those interviewed was a kid (18 in 1994, 15 at the time of the crime) who 'helped' his cousin in the commission of an amazing murder. Augustine Pena had this to say: “......They realize their mistakes. They’re totally different than what they were. They’re in here, they’re working, they’re going to college, they’re trying to better themselves. And it messes me up because I’m thinking, what are doing all this for.....when you’re going to be here for the rest of your life?........Society constantly preaches about, ‘well, we have to help the kid(s); the kid(s) are falling apart; they’re killing each other - but yet, they’re constantly throwing us away...” The last couple of sentences is what struck me. The warden interviewed did say one thing - they don’t understand ‘life’. No they really don’t. It’s the concept of time, of something, anything being finite.
