Democrat Ken Salazar Will Vote for Gonzales

What's up with Colorado Senator Ken Salazar's continued support of Alberto Gonzales? As I wrote over at 5280 this morning, this is not a politically smart move. Granted, he's attacked Bush's social security plan, but his consitutents are more apt to remember this betrayal of party values.

Ken Salazar's constituents include more than just yellow-dog Democrats.

Salazar is voting for his constituents, not for party politics.

If Salazar is voting for his constituents, then his constituents condone torture and hold the belief that the president is an extralegal entity.

I'm a Colorado Democrat. What Salazar is doing is no surprise to me. Throughout his service in Colorado state government, he's been a very, very soft moderate. In fact, many of us were disappointed that the state party fell in line behind him so readily. There was a semi-serious challenge to Salazar in the state caucuses, but the local media and the state party all but discounted Mike Miles, a Dean supporter, in his bid to buck the party and run for the seat. Salazar is a competent administrator, and at times, will stand up for the party. (He did a good job of it during the last legislative session when the GOP rammed through a redistricting plan.) Anyway, if you're looking for Salazar to be a fire-breather, you got the wrong guy.

Cliff - go back to Late German Fascists... Salazar is a decided moderate. He also tends to only pick fights that are truly based on his principles or fights that he can win. He recognizes that he can't win on Gonzales...And there is also the hispanic angle. He doesn't want to offend his ethnic voters by voting against the first possible hispanic Attorney General. And I don't think you want to doubt the effect that hispanic voters had, even in Colorado.

Jeralyn: Great post over at 5280. Can Salazar be reached to change his mind?

You've got to bring Salazar back in line. Next thing you know, he might support Scalia for Chief Justice.

flaime, I had heard that Colorado Latinos were largely responsible for the Democrat wave in November (a Senate seat, a House seat, and both state legislatures). Just looking at the county map, Kerry swept western Colorado, in several counties Gore lost four years ago. I can understand Salazar's predicament. But if he just follows the rest of his party, he won't look so bad.

Salazar holds the seat once held by Ben "Turncoat" Campbell. Campbell was elected as a Dem, then deserted with the Gingrich revolution. If we can just keep Salazar in the party, that'll be an improvement.

Skaje, It's true that hispanics had an effect at bringing Dems to the fore in local politics...But it's also true that hispanics have been supporting more and more Republicans on the federal line. Many pundits believe that Salazar had strong hispanic support for 2 reasons: 1) he is hispanic, and 2) he is a moderate that supports many of the religious ideals that are important to hispanics. If he ceases to be moderate, his support as a federal office holder might dry up.

I'm a latina and am greatly disappointed in Salazar (I voted for Mike Miles in the caucuses). I really don't care how poor or how hard Gonzales worked to get to where he is. He has no principles and no integrity; he operates by expediency. I wrote to Salazar telling him not to support Gonzales. I do not want such a man elected as the first latino to hold such an honorable? office. He is not an honorable man.
