Rice Confirmed

by TChris

As expected, the Senate confirmed President Bush's choice of Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State. Thirteen senators (twelve Democrats and independent James Jeffords) voted against the confirmation. Two Republicans did not vote, producing a final tally of 85-13.

Despite the overwhelming vote, White House vote-counters were somewhat disappointed, having hoped the nominee would glean well over 90 votes.

Although Alberto Gonzales is likely to be confirmed as Attorney General next week, his confirmation vote may be a bit tighter. As TalkLeft noted earlier today, the Senate Judiciary Committee split along party lines today, sending his confirmation to the Senate by a 10-8 vote.

I sent a rather snippy email to Sen. Maria Cantwell (D/WA) who voted to confirm Rice. She answered me saying essentially that she was giving Rice the benefit of the doubt (what "doubt" is referred to I'm not sure) but she is planning to vote against confirming Gonzales as AG.

Hey GregZ, oh how the mighty Dems have fallen. Relegated to finding victory in providing more negative votes since Henry Clay. You gotta love it!!!

Supporting the elevation of a 'national security advisor' who did NOTHING to prevent 911, you got a lot of b*lls gloating about this, Guy. You wear a necklace of 1,425 dead US soldiers, 1/4 of whom died because their C-in-C and SecDef failed to do ANY planning for the aftermath of invasion. That on top of the 3,000 people who died on 911, because Bush was too lazy (or too conniving) to warn the airlines about the rampant threats, even though George Tenet was reportedly running around DC "with his hair on fire" trying to get the admin to take the threat seriously. Rice didn't even READ the national intel assessment. Like Bush, she gets all her information from rightwing thinktanks.
