Michael Jackson vs. Tsunami Coverage

Jeff Jarvis is worried that the impending Michael Jackson trial will knock the Tsunami coverage off the front page. He's dreading the cable tv coverage and predicts blog coverage won't be that heavy. [link via Instapundit.]

Blog coverage of high profile criminal trials has never been that heavy. I think there was more for Kobe Bryant than for Scott Peterson, but still, I don't think the blog reading audience is the same as the cable tv viewing audience.

Michael Jackson trial coverage will start out wall-to-wall on cable news, but whether it stays that way will depend on ratings.

Jarvis is correct that if the Jackson case takes off, it could knock things like the Tsunami crisis off the front page. Did anyone notice this morning that the news of the reversal of Andrea Yates' conviction was the lead story above the articles on the confirmation hearing of Alberto Gonzales?

    The system sucks!! In the Andrea Yates trial, the prosecution's expert witness blatantly lied on the stand, and it's just "Oh, well, he didn't mean to..." and nothing else will happen to him. In fact, he'll probably get more work because he's a good prosecution witness, i.e., he says what's necessary to get a conviction. On the other hand, a very close friend of mine was a defense expert witness, there were two incorrect dates on his CV (everything else was correct), he testified for the defense in a USAF court martial, the defendant was convicted, yet the Big Brother Govmint came after him and convicted him of perjury, 15 months in a Federal prison. As a defense attorney once said to me, "If you're a good defnese expert, they WILL get you." And they did in this case. And it sucks.

    The kind of folks that pay attention to celebrity trials are already tired of the tsunami coverage. On balance there are a number of celebrities donating some substantial sums and making this public. Additionally, there are some high profile fund raising activities planed by the same folks. Perhaps this will keep the attention of the celebrity news crowd, although I wonder what positive things these folks are doing for the tsunami victims anyway.

    Unfortunately, the attention span of the world is short. The tsunami is becoming old news. It's not unexpected that the next big criminal trial will replace it int he headlines.
