Reuters Poll: Trump Lags, Coronavirus is Biggest Voter Concern

Reuters has new national poll results. It's findings: Trump got no convention bounce. He's 7 points behind Biden. His efforts to deflect (from his performance with the coronavirus) and redirect (attention to crime and BLM) have not worked.

Trailing Biden in most national opinion polls since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus this year, Trump has sought to change the subject from a pandemic that has killed more than 180,000 Americans, blaming Black Lives Matters protesters for violence in the cities and accusing Biden of being weak on crime.

The poll numbers show: [More...]

.... the majority — 78% — remain “very” or “somewhat” concerned about the coronavirus. Nearly 60% said Trump is at least partly responsible for the protracted school and business closures due to the virus, as well as for the high number of coronavirus cases in the United States. More than 6 million Americans have been infected with the virus, more people than in any other country.

As for crime, neither Democrats (62%) nor Republicans (65%) thought crime was rising in their communities.

Only about 8% of American adults listed crime as a top priority for the country, compared with 30% who said it was the economy or jobs, and 16% who said it was the healthcare system.

As for protesters and BLM:

53% of American adults said they remain sympathetic to people out protesting against racial inequality, nearly unchanged from 52% in a similar poll that ran in late July.

... more than half of suburban Americans and more than half of undecided registered voters are still sympathetic to them.

This poll did show one other thing: The convention produced no bounce for Biden either. His lead over Trump is just about the same as it was three weeks ago.

Trump, like Nixon, is a trickster. No one should be complacent. While on the one hand, whatever he pulls as a surprise in October may increase turnout among his supporters, he's unlikely to convert new people at this point.

Everyone knows he lies and has the character of a swamp rat. It's just a question of how many of his supporters think that his lies favor them economically or their values (immigration, race, etc). If the lies align with a supporter's values, it's more likely that person will come out to vote for Trump.

I'm not seeing a groundswell of support yet for Biden from young progressives. Maybe Markey's win in Mass. yesterday is a sign it's not coming. You can disagree but this isn't the time for complacency unless you live in a state where Democratic support is and always has been so high there is no conceivable way Trump can take the state's electoral college votes.

On the Markey - Kennedy race.

There's the twitter framing and then there's what actually happened on the ground.

Bottom line, even if you are a Kennedy you have to have some kind of a pitch to voters.  Kennedy could never figure it out.  But Markey was also clearly supported by the same people who support the Republican governor Charlie Baker.  You can't win the state without Dem voters who like Charlie Baker.  That's not just young progressives.

Markey won the wealthy suburbs by a lot and cleaned up in Boston and the Berkshires. Kennedy won working class "Gateway" cities by a little. It wasn't enough. This is a decent breakdown. Link

But Bernie could never win statewide in MA either, not in 2016 and not in 2020.

I'm just saying there was a lot more at play than just the left, not that they weren't a factor.  Markey also got endorsed by the Chuck Schumer and the Boston Globe.  They are not the left.  He needed both groups of support or he would've been toast, like what happened with Morse and in Kennedy's former district on the same night.

Also, AOC has endorsed Biden already.

Watching him I think they are very intentionally making him look and sound and act the polar opposite of Trump.

Seems I remember Biden being a bit more high energy when campaigning.  And I don't think the change has anything to do with his age or vitality.

He projects calm.  He speaks quietly and slowly.  I think they think, and I think they are on to something, that calm and confident is what people are craving.

People are exhausted.  Watching Biden is almost soothing.  I thought this was particularly on display yesterday.

On a different subject this Jeffery Goldberg piece in the Atlantic is landing with a thud.  It is shocking.  I've never been a fan of the military and I think it's unimaginably horrible.  They are saying the details have now been confirmed by the AP and WaPo.  There was a poll last week that showed Trump is losing with active duty military.  This will not help him with that.

supporters to vote twice, once my mail, and then in-person.  Such an action by a voter would be a felony in North Carolina. And, inducing someone to vote twice, e.g., Trump, would also be a felony, according to Karen Bell, Executive Director of the N.C. State Board of Elections.

Attorney General Barr, in a CNN interview by Wolf Blitzer, gave a disgraceful performance, including not knowing if voting twice was unlawful.  He would need to look into it.

While a premature claim of victory on election night would have no legal effect, it would have a "dirty tricks" effect by convincing Republicans that he won and subsequent changes were by fraud.

As Michelle Obama advised, vote by mail early or in-person if you can.  And, in my view, use drop boxes, not the blue boxes, if you can find one. Cheating is all Trump has going for him.

    I don't think I expected Kelly (none / 0) (#46)

To be the one who went public.  The story in the article about him, which he has not denied, involving a comment over his sons grave is maybe the creepiest quote.

It honestly seems like something that might be hard for a father to even discuss in public.

But I think that story, and the fact he has not denied it, is why Trump singled him out.

There are 4 sources. So my money is on Kelly, McMasters, Mattis, and....dunno.

But holy schnikes Trump absolutely lost his sh*t on Kelly in that presser.

Kelly has to respond, doesn't he?

By refusing to deny the story specifically about him he is pretty much responding without responding.  By letting it stand.

But he could certainly respond more.

Few Military Officers Willing to Defend Trump

New York Times: "The president privately raged about The Atlantic's article on Friday morning, and advisers were panicked about how to counter it. They feared it was the beginning of a constant drip of negative stories from disenchanted former officials that could sway voters. While Mr. Trump demanded that allies knock down the article, aides recognized that few senior military officers were willing to openly defend the president."

I think the military has has just about enough of Commander Trump.

An amusing sentence from the New York Times: "Mr. Kelly refused on-the-record interview requests about his recollection of comments Mr. Trump had reportedly made when Mr. Kelly was with him on a 2018 trip to France."

That makes it seem Kelly has been more than willing to talk "off the-record."
