Russian Train Blast Caused by Home-made bomb

The blast at the St Petersburg train station was reportedly a homemade bomb of TNT with shrapnel. At least ten people died.

So far, leaders of several countries have sent their condolences to Russia. Where's Trump? He isn't mentioned. In fact, when given the opportunity to say something, he declined:

When a reporter asked Trump if he contacted the Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the terrorist attack in the metro St. Petersburg, [Trump] did not say anything.

[Added: He later spoke to Putin by phone and offered U.S. support in the investigation. [More...]

Authorities don't seem to know now whether this was a suicide bomb and the suspect is dead, or whether it was a bomb left at the station and the attacker got away. This is the photo released by Kyrgyzstan's GKNB security service of the suspect, 22 year old Akbarzhon Jalilov. But, Kyrgystan, while identifying the man in the photo, also says it has no idea if he committed the attack. It says its information comes from the Russians. This appears to be home-grown terrorism, not the work of an international group:

Rakhat Sulaymanov, spokesman for the country's secret service, said: "It was established, that the suspect in this act of terror was born in our republic. "It is probable that he acquired Russian nationality."

But there are other reports saying they are investigating whether the suspect had foreign ties to jihadist groups. Even more confusing, now there are other articles reporting that authorities say the suspect was not born in Kyrgystan, but somewhere else in Central Asia.

that the reporter's question was intrusive, trivial, and pointless.  An answer would have told us nothing except the obvious: that we continue to hang on the every word of this gilded jerk.

TNT is a fairly unusual component to a homemade bomb.

William Powell, the author of "The Anarchist Cookbook," has died.

It was inevitable that he did it, James J. F. Forest, a professor of security studies at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, said in a phone interview. If he hadnt done it, somebody else would have.

That was a blast from the past. (none / 0) (#4)

From the same publisher I also had The Big Brother Game.   Filled with now obsolete techniques and technology, what has endured is the utility of social engineering, then called by author French, deliciously politically incorrectly, the Secretary F***.
