Hillary Clinton will present her plan for immigration reform today in Las Vegas. She will say a path to citizenship is essential.

Of all the people – including Latino GOP senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida – who have declared that they are running for president, only Hillary Clinton offers a Spanish-language campaign website.

“Without question, anyone who goes up against Hillary will have to fight as far as getting Latino voters,” said Fernand Amandi, a Democratic pollster based in Florida. “With Hispanic voters, she gets it. It’s a hallmark of her campaigns. She’s always understood and valued the role of Hispanics in the United States.”

She will also stress family reunification:

In Nevada, where Latinos are 25 percent of the population, Clinton’s campaign says she will talk about how current U.S. immigration policies – which include a high rate of deportations – are leading to the separation of families.

Early in the campaign and a good time--a good day--to make her straightforward statement about a full path to citizenship for so many shaded by their status as undocumented aliens. Another significant step forward.

The timing & venue is an example of Hillary Clinton's thoughtful pacing for a long campaign. Watching the individual measures as the strategy becomes more defined, it is easy to see the role of her experience.

Of course, my partisan self today will then anticipate how Jeb Bush & Florida buddy Mario Rubio will squiggle, dance to the theme that Hillary formally sets. The Repubs' word choice in reaction will be challenging ... for them. It will be difficult, mostly, for Jeb & Mario because she moved the question and issue more directly and sooner than might have been expected for opposition positioning. IMO.

If any of those candidates put up a Spanish-language campaign website, the heads of the rightie base would positively explode. Maybe a sympathetic totally non coordinated (of course!) PAC will do it for them.
