Recreational Pot Sales Begin In Washington State

Washington state opened its doors to recreational marijuana sales yesterday. There were long lines and very happy customers. James Lathrop, the owner of Cannibis City, came out at 9:00 a.m. with a big pair of scissors to cut the tape and said:

It's time to free the weed.

Among those who waited in line for hours:[More...]

[Deb] Greene, 65, a retiree, said she doesn’t smoke pot often. But now she could enjoy it legally at her Ballard home, maybe with “Game of Thrones” on TV. “It’s incredibly liberating,” she said. “It’s the dream of every retiree, sleep in and smoke a bowl.”

....Ramona Rodriguez, 65, who bought two grams in Bellingham, said she’s been smoking since she was 18. In 37 years, this was the first time she took part in a transaction that ended with the question: “Receipt in the bag?”

Even elected Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes waited in line to buy some:

“The most important take away here is that today marijuana sales became legal and I’m here to personally exercise myself this new freedom,” said Holmes.

...[A reporter]asked if that meant Holmes was buying pot to which he said yes and that he hoped Jenny Durkan (US Attorney) and the DEA wouldn’t mind.

“I bought 2-2 gram bags of OG pearl which was recommended,” said Holmes. “I’m keeping one bag for posterity and one for personal enjoyment at some point when it’s appropriate.”

Holmes said "The best way you can support law enforcement is to make this legal and regulate it and tax it and that’s the message here.”

He also assured the reporter he wasn't breaking any city ordinances or policies.

“It does not,” said Holmes. “I am not going to display it [or] give it to anyone else and I’m going to enjoy it responsibly.”

80 bucks for those 4 grams the DA purchased, 20 and change of which is taxes...I'm getting 7 grams for 80 bucks on the black market.  Granted it may not be as good as the OG Pearl, but it's killer-diller sh*t none the less.

I fear Washington is over-regulating causing high prices and shortages, which kinda defeats the purpose and gives the black market a way to stay in the game...but otoh no threat of chains and cages is certainly worth paying a premium.

With a nephew whose life has been completely derailed after getting hold of some weed laced w PCP and ending up with psychotic break and institutionalized for a period of time.....while he's somewhat better he is still unable to finish school or work and suffers anxiety, ptsd and insomnia.....anyway I wonder:
Will this legalization regulate the product and ensure it is not "spiked" with other substances that may cause real (I hope in my nephew's case not irreversable) damage...it's been nearly three years and he still doesn't have his life back....after one bad batch....

that is exactly what legalization will do, amongst many other great things...insure that when you want to buy marijuana, marijuana is all that you will get.

PCP is not fun....tried it willingly once, never again....awful drug.  The government and the jerk who dosed your nephew owe him an apology.
