Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Goes to Court

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is making his first federal court appearance today for his arraignment in the Boston Marathon bombing case.

He is already at the courthouse. The hearing is set for 3:30 pm. The appearance will be a short one. The courtroom is packed. His supporters are also at the courthouse. Here's a picture of them. A live feed outside the courthouse is here.

    Magistrate Judge Bowler (5.00 / 1) (#2)

warned the attorneys about filing pleadings under seal in the future. Maybe this case will become more transparent now.

Media in courtroom noted that Tsarnaev repeatedly wiped his mouth. His family said that his jaw was broken.  He could be missing teeth and therefore drooling. (I'm serious.) I want to know more about the circumstances of this gunshot to the head.

The media also reported he seemed awfully relaxed for the circumstances.  Maturity could be a problem here.  He could be in denial. I wish Judy Clarke and Miriam Conrad the best of luck.  He's so young...too young for the DP and so young to be facing life in prison.  In no way do I support the DP, but what would be more humane in this case...50 plus years in solitary or resting in peace? I never thought I would ask that question.

he could get a lesser sentence than life?  Death is out of the question, but so is life in solitary.  I don't think he understands what's facing him.

before we hear from Holder and company about whether the DP will be sought?  Status conference was set for September 23rd.  Would think we would hear before then?

Behavior does not sound consistent (none / 0) (#5)

He sounds MKUltra'd and/or drugged up to be honest. His behavior at the trial was not consistent with even recent descriptions of Dzhokhar's typical behavior:

Is it even the same person? I guess  Dzhokar grew 3-4 inches in the last three months (possible I guess for his age), his accent got ALOT thicker, and had no gunshot wounds on his neck worth mentioning. Do defendants usually arrive 4 1/2 hours early to their 7 minute trials?

I'm thinking that he must be on some pretty strong medication.  I wish he hadn't yawned during his plea though.  That kind of behavior whether drug-induced or not will only inflame the emotions of all concerned.

His gunshot wounds are hidden by his long hair, I think. And, the others were to the legs and hand.

One media observor noticed that he has a permanent twitch on the left side of his face.  Could be nerve damage.  If it's the vagus nerve then that would explain the deafness in his left ear as well.

    I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but.. (none / 0) (#7)

There is a reason why the decoy theory is catching fire on the internet.

    1. The height difference. Dzhokhar was 5'10 in April, now he is "over 6 feet tall" according to reporters. His height in April is confirmed with the footage of him and Tamerlan and the gym. He is clearly not a "very tall" guy 3 days before the bombing

    2. Pictures and video of the hearing have leaked on twitter. Dzhokhar looks to have gained 30 lbs.

    3. Also in the new pictures, you can get a clear view of the left side and front of his neck as he glances back at the victims. He cranes his neck so you can see below his ear. According to that message, he had a hole the size of a quarter below his left ear. In the pictures, you cannot see a scar or any sign of injury in that area.

    4. His wrestling team mates say that he was exhibiting different mannerisms, ways of moving, different posture than the Dzhokhar they knew. He also exhibited a thick accent that he never had before.

    5. He did way more than just yawn (several times by the way) at the proceedings. He smirked/smiled to his sobbing, praying sisters repeatedly, turned back to look at the victims while the trial was going on, stroked his chin, wiped his mouth, rested his chin on his hand, played with his splint, licked his lips, wiped his mouth, all during this 8 minute trial. He was also reported to have seem disinterested and nonchalant overall. He then blew a kiss to his sisters at the end of the trial. This is truly bizarre behavior for anyone, let alone the young man who impressed his lawyers with his manners and intelligence,as well as seeming pretty even keeled on the phone call with his mother . When I said drugs, I meant hallucinogenic, barbiturates, MDMA or something. Whether it was the genuine un-programmed Dzhokhar, the real Dzhokhar exhibiting a government manufactured alternate personality, or a decoy, the guy, whoever he was, was on some serious drugs, no doubt about it. Either that, or the real, un-programmed, un-drugged Dzhokhar has developed dissociative identity disorder unprompted by government sponsored torture because his situation is so horrible.

Federal Prosecutors are polling the victims in this case to see if they should seek the death penalty

Re the comments above about the difference in appearance/accent of Tsarnev - I think you will find that can be explained by spending 3 months in solitary confinement and recovering from wounds suffered during capture and surgery etc and medication used. Lots of medication makes you gain weight, causes drowsiness etc - according to reports from his medical reports he was shot 16 times by police.

So much about this case makes me feel really uncomfortable and horrified at what is unfolding in USA. Why are people allowing this to continue?
