Jill Kelley's FBI Agent Identified, Security Clearances Stripped

The FBI agent/friend of Jill Kelley who brought the anonymous e-mails she received to the FBI is Frederick W. Humphries. Humprhies works on terrorism cases. His friends describe him as obsessive, with "experience in counterterrorism, conservative political views and a reputation for aggressiveness."

Humphries and his wife were "social friends" with Jill Kelley. Humphries contacted Rep. Dave Reichert because he was convinced the FBI was stalling the case for political reasons. Reichert connected him with Eric Cantor, who passed his info on to FBI Director Mueller.

A friend of Humphries says the shirtless photo was sent years earlier and was "a joke." The Kelley and Humphries families often exchanged photos of each other.

First penalties: Paula Broadwell lost her security clearance today and Jill Kelley lost her special clearance to access the MacDill military base. [More...]

Broadwell sent Gen. Allen an anonymous e-mail in May saying she knew Allen had a meeting scheduled with Kelley. (She warned him to stay away from her.) Allen forwarded the e-mail to Kelley, and so it began.

In June, Kelley got more e-mails, one of which referenced a planned meeting with Gen. Petraeus.

So now Kelley wasn't just e-mailing and exchanging documents with Gen. Allen, but meeting him in person?

Broadwell does sound like a cyber-stalker in checking their schedules, but I'm still more interested in why two top generals were in such frequent contact with a party planner and her bizarre twin sister, and why the generals would support the sister in her custody fight -- even after she had lost it.

Broadwell's problem now is that she apparently stored classified documents at home.

Petraeus said today he will testify before Congress.

If the FBI agent didn't do anything wrong, why was he referred to OPR (Office of Professional Responsibility) for an investigation into his conduct in the Kelley affair? Here's a picture of Humphries in 1999.

Also, more details on Jill and Scott Kelley's financial troubles. They are "flat broke", and their family residence (not just their downtown office building) has been in foreclosure since 2010 (no payments since 2009.) The $25,000 credit card debt was nothing compared to:

Regions Bank sued the Kelleys for $253,437.31 in unpaid credit card bills, according to court documents. In February the couple agreed to pay $850 a month, with $8,500 down, until the balance is paid, records show.

I wonder how Kelley can afford to pay Abbe Lowell. And why she needs a top flight criminal defense attorney in Washington, D.C. as opposed to just a crisis management consultant. My guess is it has to do with what was on her computer that she turned over to the FBI so it could investigate the anonymous e-mails that were linked to Broadwell. And I don't mean possibly flirtatious e-mails from Allen.

Why would the Kelleys rack up that kind of credit card debt, unless they thought they would be reimbursed? I wonder if Kelley was asking Petraeus and Allen to help her get money from the military, in exchange for her (or her sister's) helpful liaison work with the Lebanese and other Middle Eastern officials. The media is being led like a dog to water to Broadwell, but I still think there's a bigger story in Jill Kelley and Natalie Khawam.

On the "why such large credit card bills", maybe they're just as crazed when it comes to shopping.  A lack of self-control or self-awareness in one area often manifests itself elsewhere, too.

The press is following the Broadwell trail rather than the twin nightmares because the latter are almost certainly tied up in some flavor of intel work.  There's no reason for 4-star Allen to communicate with them other than that.

I still hope someone liberates the divorce trial transcript and Record.  There's bound to have been an appeal or something....  Of course, that amount of paper won't come cheap.

But, all this is playing out as yet another example of why calling the FBI is usually a bad idea.

I can think of reasons for Gen. Allen to communicate with Jill Kelley that have nothing to do with her and intel work. He likes her. He's a bit crushed out on her. He likes to go to her parties. He got into some sort of relationship with her (not necessarily sleeping w/her) and didn't know how to extricate himself. He's flattered by the attentions of a younger woman.

Humphries was based in Seattle when Ahmed Rassam was arrested New Year's Eve 1999 for trying to smuggle explosives here from B.C., on his way to blow up LAX. Humphries ended up as the lead investigator on the Ressam case. Apparently, he contacted Reichert (whom he may have met back then?) when the Tampa authorities told him to back off from trying to inject himself into the investigation of the Broadwell/Kelley matter.

large credit card bills are because Kelley was trying to buy access or something with those parties and she footed the bill for those parties. Unless she's completely dumb she should not expect to be reimbursed for that kind of thing and the credit cards aren't the only thing that is out of control for them. Like you're saying they have a building in downtown Tampa in foreclosure and then their own house.

and Petraeus hadn't done some due diligence on these women, Broadwell did, and what she found led her to believe that Kelley was not going to be someone good for Allen's career.  I get the sense that Broadwell had deep, deep respect for the military and for those who have made it a career, and saw Kelley as one of two loose cannons - Natalie being the other - that had the potential to harm Allen's position.

If it were just Petraeus, I'd assume Broadwell was just a territorial, stay-away-from-my-man type, but her reaching out to Allen made me think she fancied herself as a protector.

I could be wrong, but that's my take.

Interesting article on Jill Kelley and how she tried to use her connection with General Petraeus:  getting TransGas Development Systems a no-bid contract with her compensation being a 2% commission which could have amounted to a fee in the tens of millions of dollars.

I'd say there was more than enough crazy to go around no matter from which angle a reporter approaches this thing.

And I belive the phrase you wanted there was "like a horse to water", as in "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink", but I'm still not sure that's the metaphor really needed here.
