Friday Morning Open Thread

Although Seantrel Henderson's commitment to USC may be up in the air, Lane Kiffin is not stopping in the recruiting wars. He just got a verbal commit from a 13 year old.

The latest unemployment news. At this point, it is hard to figure out what it all means. Meteor Blades tries to explain it.

The Super Bowl is Sunday. The Colts are 4 1/2 point favorites (Over/Under is 56.5.). The fun betting propositions in the Super Bowl are the prop bets. For example, I like Heads in the coin toss. We'll be posting a full rundown of the game this weekend.

This is an Open Thread.

overbearing parent like MM with that "home schooling" situation.  There are now the many youth sports camps run by college and professional players/coaches where your son or daughter can be trained, prepped and encouraged by the hands-on presence of the big time local coach and his assistants.

For most parents, it's flattering to be then told that your child shows "potential to succeed" at the college level if the learning and training and normal growth continue.  Then the promise of the college scholarship to the big school enters the parents' mind, and so forth.

Hard to fault most of these parents.  The problem seems to be not at the parent end but at the NCAA end and its lax attitudes about 13 yr olds being able to handle some serious pressure to succeed.

is the only college gridiron coach who's out there aggressively recruiting -- or "early evaluation", whatever euphemism is used -- in that ridiculously young age group.  Since it's apparently not yet an NCAA violation to solicit such verbal commitments from 13 yr olds, we can safely assume the practice is widespread.

And not just in football but in basketball.

it was the NFL, and Rex, as a representative of the NFL is being fined because regardless of whether anyone thinks it was a justified reaction to the fans, the NFL regards it as unacceptable behavior.

Rex is going to be Rex, NFL or no NFL.  When Rex first came to Baltimore, he was arrested for assaulting another parent at one of his children's games: he just punched the guy in the mouth.

was the NFL; better, actually, that it was the Jets, because that says that the behavior reflects badly on the team, not just on the NFL.

I find it kind of interesting that Rex apparently feels that his head coaching position gives him the right to let loose in a way that he didn't as a D-coordinator in Baltimore.

It may jive quite nicely with the in-your-face NY attitude, but I think it will eventually come back to bite him in the butt.

he was fined 50 large by the Jets, the NFL decided not to discipline him at all.  So I guess they don't think it was an unacceptable reaction, perhaps they looked into the altercation with greater care than the Jets did.

I understand the teams and the league have an image they want to uphold and all, but their employees are human, and humans can only take so much abuse.  And a good employer backs up their employees when they are abused by customers.  The Jets treated Rex like Dennis treated Brad Hamilton at the burger joint in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"...thats not the way an employer should treat a valued employee.

I hadn't heard about the Baltimore altercation before...no doubt Rex is a firey guy but I wonder if the guy he clocked in B'more didn't beg for it like this arse in Miami.

I'm as non-violent as they come Anne, I've been in one donnybrook since junior high, and that was only because some juicehead wouldn't take no for an answer to a request to fight and threw a bar stool at me:) That incident taught me that sometimes people are just, as my old man used to say, "cruisin' for a bruisin'".  Thats what this smells like...this guy was trying to bait Rex into clocking him and scoring a settlement or something.  Kudos for Rex for not taking the bait.
