While I Was Waiting

While I was waiting for Sen. Barack Obama to announce the other half of the Democratic ticket, I made a backup site for TalkLeft in case this one goes down during the convention, like it did on primary and debate nights. Also I can blog from my i-phone on it which I can't do here since Scoop isn't coded for it.

One problem: I can't figure out how to make the comment page include my sidebar. I need for the sidebar to appear on every page. Suggestions, anyone?

I guess I'll miss the momentous announcement since I'm about to leave for dinner with Jane of Firedoglake.

Here's an open thread to continue the discussion. I still don't think it will be Joe Biden, or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

He certainly fits the profile that I have of Obama's choice. He's very conservative. He's a background figure who won't overshadow BO. He's a Harvard MBA. He's part of a new wave of Democrats that are becoming harder to distinguish from Repugs. I think he's just what BO is looking for.

The GOP and McCain's Campaign will take care of it, I'm sure. They'll be sure to warmly introduce this new Edwards to the voters.

However, I'm not sure they're prepared for him because he seemed to get a brighter spotlight only today.

Whatever it is, I think it's going to be Biden. And according to Ed Henry at CNN, they're ready for him (and Bayh and Kaine too).

It just makes the campaign look indecisive or unsure or possibly incompetent -- why get the media all lathered up and then leave them hanging? Brian Lehrer on WNYC was just beside himself this morning -- he said that of course they would break into regular broadcasting when the announcement came, and then proceeded with a conversation that included speculation on the possibility that people would be texted in the middle of the night. Then someone called in to say that his iPhone was on the nightstand next to his bed, so he'll get the message right away!

Seriously? There is no way that the announcement is going to come anywhere near matching the buildup. Talk about anti-climactic. And really, there was no other news today to discuss? Ugh, already.

the record that Hillary has NOT been vetted so the likelihood of her being a surprise pick tomorrow is nonexistent. Then she babbled on about Bill's speeches and the Clinton library, etc., etc. I groaned when she said that the Obama camp feels there is enough excitement at the top of the ticket so they can pick a VP with less sizzle.

I still can't get over the fact that they didn't vet Hillary, even for the sake optics, especially after Obama said she'd be on anybody's short-list. The Obama campaign has truly bought into its' own hype and I guess they figure Hillary should work at bringing her supporters over to Obama even though picking her for VP would have made unity a lot easier. At this point, I can honestly say I kind of hope Obama loses. And I know I'll be sleeping in tomorrow.

is why the Obama camp didn't make it abundantly clear some time ago that it woulddn't be Hillary. It kills me to see it, but she's being a good soldier through this whole process. I'm sure she would have announced that she has asked not to be considered, if it would help the party. A lot of her supporters would have been pissed off, but they'll be just as pissed tomorrow (or whenever). Instead, you've got a lot of Hillary voters who are still thinking it could be her, and a lot of the coverage of the pick will be about why it wasn't Hillary.

I thik they're really overestimating the impact of McCain's house thing. It certainly doesn't seem like something that should determine the timing of an announcement like this. The story was going to lose its legs once the convention started anyway.

nothing but pouring salt in our wounds. Why should we Hillary supporters be waiting in anticipation tomorrow to find out it's not her when we could have been let down gently weeks ago? Why force us to endure another letdown tomorrow? Others came out and said they weren't interested in being VP, why couldn't they have had Hillary do that or release a joint statement or something. Personally, I need to hear directly from Hillary that she wasn't in the running for VP. It just seems like if you can think of what will piss off Hillary supporters the most, that's the route you can expect the Obama campaign to take.

It is quite possible that Romney could solidify Nevada and keep Colorado within the Repub ambit (or, make Colorado a truly knock down-drag out fight.) You act like membership in the Democratic Party is an end rather than a means.

It's actually been kind of amazing, not directing this at you personally, to watch so many Obama supporters who are voting in their first election tell people who have voted Democratic for decades, "Guess you're not real Democrats after all!"

by bselznick on Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 08:45:07 PM EST
After the convention go on the offensive.  Enter into an emergency session of Congress and mark up a single bill.  All offshore gas and oil and all oil and gas from Alaska can only be distributed and sold in the 50 states.  This would make GOPers squirm.

Oh Boy, imagine the commercials, why is GOPer so and so against American oil for Americans?  Why does McSame want us to drill, but not use the oil?  It would never pass, but it would make GOPers squirm for as long as they want to make offshore drilling an issue.
