Detroit Mayor's Bond Modified, Will Attend the DNC

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, indicted for perjury in a text-messaging sex scandal, was arrested last week and jailed for a bond violation. He had traveled to a business event in Canada. The next day he was charged with additional offenses.

Monday, over objections of prosecutors, the Judge modified his bond conditions to toss the home monitoring (ankle bracelet) condition and allow him to come to Denver for the Democratic National Covention.

Prosecutors may appeal. Kilpatrick's lawyer is the excellent James Thomas of Detroit, a long time TL pal.

citizen, would have her butt sitting in a jail cell if I had done what this guy has done...oh well, democracy and fairness as we have known it, has been chucked out the window.

    Surely Obama doesn't want him there (5.00 / 1) (#2)

Because the Detroit papers this morning were reporting that the judge was notoriously tough on defendants.

This should be an interesting side show to the convention - Kwame showing up with his 23 body guards and other entourage.  Obama is on the record calling Kwame a "great mayor" who was doing "an outstanding job" and that he "was grateful to call [him] a friend." My guess is cameras will find Kwame throughout the convention, which will only remind people of Rezko and Ayers and other "friends" of Obama.

    why the hell? (none / 0) (#11)

Why in the heck would he show up at the convention?  Surely, it will not be helpful for Obama for him to be there.  Good grief.
