Why Joe Lieberman Caucuses With Democrats

(Guest Post by Big Tent Democrat)

Joe's Pajama Party:

SIMON: -- on this. That if you do win -- and you're doing well at the moment -- if you do win as an Independent, you will still then become a Democrat, stay as a Democrat and caucus with the Democrats.

LIEBERMAN: Yeah. The critical thing is to caucus with the Democrats because if you don't caucus with a party, you don't have the opportunity to hold your seniority in the committee assignments that you've got and that's important to the folks back home

So he caucuses with Dems not because he believes in Democratic values, but for "seniority." No wonder the Bush and the GOP thinks he'll switch:

George W. Bush moved a step closer to Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman's re-election bid in Connecticut as an independent candidate when Tom Kuhn, the president's college roommate and close friend, co-sponsored a Lieberman fund-raising luncheon Thursday in downtown Washington. . . . Republicans backing him against antiwar candidate Ned Lamont, the Democratic nominee, hope for a change of heart by Lieberman.

More than hope looks like.

Big Tent - After being attacked by many senior Demos, and by the blogosphere, do you really wonder why he might go Repub? To me the wonder will be if he doesn't.

How well do insidious self serving politicians flourish in the GOP hothouse that masquerades as congress? Extremely so, and more than the few. But Lieberman; he is beyond the pale. What a despicable unprincipled piece of work he is. He is truly shameless. That a grown man could, without reserve, stand before the people of Connecticut and offer such blatant lies, his reasoning for standing as an indipendent, plumbs politics to a depth unseen before. What a loathsome contemptible creature he is. Unbefitting to be entered into any existing "file," Lieberman is worthy of a dedicated file of his own. But what to name it and which rock to keep it under I know not.

If this is what is important to the people of Conn. shouldn't the D's state that if he wins as an independent he goes to the very back opf the line, loses all senoirity and can only expect appointemnts to the committe on naming post offices and widget procurement for the Nat. weather service.

Jim: It does not surprise me. It is what I expect. It is why we argue that Lieberman is aligned with Bush and the Republicans. It is why we argue for his defeat.

Big Tent - No, that is not true. You argue against him because he is a liberal who is also strong on national defense. However, your desire for purity of spirit has relected him, and may just push him into the Repub camp. In the meantime, health care, women's rights, gay rights, etc., languish because of your agenda.

JimakaPPJ, Lieberman is actually weak on defense. If being strong on defense means supporting anti-terrorism policies that work, then every hawk is weak on defense, since the only way to solve terrorism is via good old-fashioned police work. Britain didn't stop the airline plot by declaring martial law in northern England; it stopped it by doing competent detective work, abetted by an intelligence community that doesn't put all of its eggs in the one basket that is electronic surveillance.

Levy - I don't remember anyone suggesting that England declare martial law, perhaps you live in a different universe. As far as good old fashioned police work, I give you FBI's inability to read the contents of the now infamous Moussaoui's hard drive, as well as a FBI agent's refusal to "spy on other Moslems." Yes indeed. Good old police work that worked so well for years and years that 9/11 happened.
