National Pro-Immigrant Rallies Planned Monday

Monday there will be another national round of pro-immigrant rallies. This time, it is expected that other ethnic groups will join in what up to now has mostly been Latinos.

Koreans said they will march in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, banging traditional protest drums. Chinese said they will parade out of Chinatowns in San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, led by marchers wearing colorful dragon costumes. Haitians said they will be heard in Miami and New York, and Africans said they will be among the tens of thousands who will gather at the Washington Monument.

While the majority of the undocumented in the U.S. are Latino, other groups have a vested interest in immigration reform.

Asian groups have become particularly concerned about immigration as the United States steps up its efforts to deport illegal Chinese and Korean immigrants. The Department of Homeland Security recently said that it is close to an agreement with China over the repatriation of about 39,000 Chinese immigrants. Korean activists said families have been torn apart when immigrant parents were deported while their American-born children remained in the United States.

[More info on the planned Chinese internment camps including the contract to a Halliburton subsidiary to build them is here.]

The groups for Monday's rallies are being organized by word of mouth, by radio stations and old-fashioned fliers.

This is their time. Do what you can to support them. We need an easier path to legalization. Let families stay together without fear of jail and deportation. Let the undocumented live and work out in the open. Make employers pay them a fair wage and provide health care and other benefits. All immigrants should have access to all public services and benefits including driver licenses, higher education, and health care.

Here are ten provisions that should be included in a legalization program. Will we get them all? Not this time around. But we need to push for as many as possible.

Your Senators and Congresspersons will be in your home district during the next two weeks. Call their local office or stop by. Tell them to say no to any compromise bill that includes the punitive enforcement provisions in Sensenbrenner's H.R. 4437.

Tell them to reject any deal unless there is a guarantee it will be protected on the Senate floor from damaging Republican amendments and in the later House/Senate conference committee. Tell your Senators the best way to protect a Senate deal in conference is to insist that the entire Senate Judiciary Committee be appointed conferees to any later House/Senate conference.

ok, so if i understand you correctly, you essentially want lawbreakers rewarded for................breaking the law. stop me when i'm not following. while i appreciate the heartbreak associated with familys potentially being broken upm there is both an easy, historical and constitutionally supportable method of alleviating this problem: send the entire family back to its native land. you gasp! how could i suggest such a heartless tack? easy, really. you, as a defense attorney know the basis full well, it goes back to english common law, probably the code of hammurabi: no one should profit as a consequence of their illegal acts. we see the modern day version in "son of sam" laws. but, you say, children aren't chattel! well, actually, up until the age of majority, they pretty much are. you could look it up! without too much of a stretch, one could easily argue that the laws disallowing criminals profiting from their criminal acts, applies as well to their families. this would be the U.S. born children of those who consciously broke our laws when entering this country. it would be unfortunate yes, but a perfectly legitimate action. further, the party(s) at fault would not be the heartless govt, but the lawbreakers themselves, the parents. immigration laws clearly need revamping, no doubt. however, how is it fair, to those who went through the onerous process, by the book, to now let all those who didn't get away with it? whatever happened to the concept of equity?

TO CPINVA I SAY AMEN!!!!! i've been in trouble with the law several times (thank god i finally grew up) and me or nobody else is rewarded for breaking the law i'm sure it isn't easy but it is possible to come to this country legally! my wife used to work for a mexican lady thats been here for many years (she owned a restraunt) and refuses to get her citizenship she wants to take advantage of all the benefits that the government offers her and if she gets her citizenship she loses alot of those benefits so come legally and get your citizenship and LEARN THE LANGUAGE

Yeah! Three cheers for the pro-corporate cheap labor trap! I can't understand why so many on the Left are standing with Corporate America against the interests of American workers. Regardless of the source (India, China, or Mexico), the ultimate aim of the pro-corporate, free-trade "immigration reform" (i.e. guest workers) agenda is to needlessly increase the supply of cheap foreign labor, and the immoral erosion of wages and job opportunities for the American workforce. In other words, more workers, lower wages; fewer workers, higher wages. With respect to illegal immigration, we must first turn off the corporate magnet attracting foreign laborers entering the U.S. illegally. This means strict enforcement through heavy fines and jail time for business owners who hire illegal workers. Additionally, North America must deal with the failure of NAFTA, while at the same time pursue policy objectives that motivate Mexico to get off the dime and use their common wealth for the common good to create employment opportunities for their citizens.

CP, Why do you take the position of corporate amerika? Illegal immigration is a social consequence of our society's demand for cheap labor. Bushco and congress want us to blame a powerless group rather than the lawbreakers who really profit from this. The people that are protesting are out there because congress is on the verge of passing more business friendly/worker hostile legislation. Too bad that white middle class amerika (what's left of it) doesn't have the same interest in getting off their fat asses and learning about the issue instead of evoking the usual "Close the border!" fantasy. Or worse, building more prisons. Take our country back: 1. Raise the minimum wage. 2. Promote trade unions to keep illegals out and keep the baldheads in check. 3. Roll back Bush's tax cuts 4. End corporate welfare. Close offsshore loopholes. Tax excessive profits excessively. 5. Trash NAFTA/CAFTA 6. Redeploy Iraq troops. Bring the National Guard troops back immediately. 7. Arrest and try Bushco for treason.

fafnir - Please tell me why we should not do noth? A. Completely, absolutely, without fail, no excuses, nobody through, close the border. B. Fine, jail, etc., etc. people, not just corporations who employ illegals. Guess you better start checking the status of the guy mowing your yard, eh?? ;-)

Amen Che, well said. I too am troubled by the concerted effort on the part of the corporatists to drive down wages and worsen the way of life for working people in the US and worldwide. I just refuse to blame fellow working people for that effort. Anyone who takes to the streets to defend themselves is already an American in my book...they seem to know more about what it means than most of us lazy natives who don't take to the streets to fight whats going on.

Che - Can you define excessive profits? What percent of earnings should be retained for R&D? Future downswings? etc. etc.... As I noted. Shut the border. Fine and jail the employers. But don't think that centralized economic planning will do anything but destroy the economy.

JimakaPPJ, First, I mow my own lawn. Second, the problem is that the Dems are on the wrong side of the issue. Our immigration policies must strengthen our society, but not be part of a corporate agenda to divide society by race and economic opportunity. Therefore, the wrong approach is to open the flood gates and allow corporations to erode the wages of working- and middle-class Americans. To deal with illegals, you don't build a fence; you take away the incentive for them to cross the border -- go after the employers who hire them. Additionally, we must deal the failure of NAFTA, and with Mexico's negligence in failing to provide sufficient employment and training opportunities for their citizens. Lastly, it's a false choice to suggest that we must either round them up, or absorb the illegals who are here. The third option is attrition through enforcement of legal employment. By turning off the job magnet, illegals have no reason to stay. Many, if not most, will return on their own.

All things being equal, why is the illegal immigrant issue being used to bash the left as being soft on crime, while people like Delay get to keep all the money that they accumulated from criminal activity plus their huge pension. The republican party is the party of crime at this point. We do not hear a peep about that from the right, except that all are innocent. If found guilty, the charges are minor and a set up..... Perjury and obstruction are minor.... tricked into it by a partisan or overly ambitious DA. And the pardons will come. Illegal activity and the left's purported endorsement of it to it is a tried and true (truly tired) RCN talking point.... when the illegal activity is done by people who are poor, or Democrat. Outsourcing, is OK. Markets should be unregulated. But make a new class of incarcerated felons to compete with our Black population for scarce jail cells? And we are only talking about illegal Mexicans the rest are OK? Emigrees vs Immigrants, mexicans are at the bottom of the pile. Well it is a toss up between blacks (abductees), whose families have been here hundreds of years, and mexicans. This issue brings out more hypocrisy than any other. Issues of scarcity and European blood, read white heritage, are the issue. It seems that the ones up in arms cannot get around the fact that they will be made minority in America to a group who is seen as a bunch of half breed indians. Democracy rocks except when the people voting are either to stupid, the wrong religion, the wrong ethnicity .....what else..... oh illegal voters. I expect the Immigration issue will be the RCN focus, that is until the October surprise. Wonder what that will be?

Che - Can you define excessive profits? Yes, Captain Obvious. One would be 36 Billion for Exxon after taxes (and your precious R&D). Try Googling record profits. there's only 54 million hits.

Inmigration reform is necessary to put clear rules to a hypocrite economy that gets benefits from exploit persons without recognized their basic humnan rights. Ironicaly many who oppose this measures don't realize that in some years many of their retirement pensions will be supported by young brown people. And yes, many of the people who are denying this fact still don't realize that US is not inside a bubble, wake up! and assume that inmigration is a problem that doesn't have borders and it has to be solved based in international cooperation,.... How things can be imnproved in developing countries if money spend in wars and military industry will addres to support education, health and joint productuve investmets?? and What if is reduced the corporate-model economny that is being exported and currently is damaging local industries and economies in developing countries? for sure the pression for a decent jobe will be reduced. Inmigration had hapenned during the history of the world and is happening in others developed countris rigth now. Let me remind you that US is a country of inmigrants, many who came here 300 years ago were looking for opportunities for them and their decendeds. Don't blame people for be attracted by a decend salary, I think probably many of you would do the same if had born in other country with limited oportunities for education and work. Regards

Jim, get a hold of yourself man. They're not gonna close the border. Stop embarrassing yourself! People will think you're with us, for Christ sake! Stop embarrassing us! Get a grip! They're not going to close the Border. They're not going to do Elian Gonzales 12 million times. Get that out of your mind. It's not going to happen. It's just interplanetary chatter being picked up by Jeff Sessions' ears. There's no way that klueless kyl and the nitwits in the house like that lunatic tancredo are gonna prevail on this thing. It's just not gonna happen. That ship has sailed. You've got to get this crazy notion outta your noggin that Sensenbrenner's idea of reform is the only notion of reform. It ain't. This notion that everyone's a felon for openers is a nonstarter. The only felons are in the administration and in the repo leadership. Oh, and delay. Can't forget that cretin. Once we've established the reality of the situation, we can begin to work on a solution. If ya wanna screw around and play repo games, forget it.

It proves nothing. charlie, I have been saying close the border and get the employers for much longer than you have been here. Get a life, juvenile. There was a world before you arrived. Squeaky - Maybe because the Demos just blocked a bill that would have given a vote to a amendment that would gave required Homeland Security to certify the border closed before anything else is done. You know. Step 1. Close the border. Step 2. Shut down the employment of illegals. Step 3. Figure out what to do with the 12 million we have... Why do the Demos want open borders? fafnir writes:

So the wage level would have to be less than what is being paid in Mexico. Hmmmm. That means US citizens will be making the same as Mexicans... Not to smart. charlie - No, you cut the BS. Jondee - If you don't understand that you could post "Jonde is a sweetheart" 54 million times and it would come up as 54 million hits.... well, then you just don't understand. Of course it would be meaningless. Che - See my comment to Jondee. 1. Shut down border. - Bring in NG with aicraft and ATV's. Pick'em and send'em back, no questions asked. After awhile, many will just give up. Tell Mexico that we may start to blockade all exports to the US if they don't start helping. 2. Employers - Have everyone get a National ID that is very, very, very hard to forge. If a company is found to have employed with a fake ID, fine'em $10K per employee. If no ID, $500K and 5 years in the big house. Now, that wasn't hard, was it? I mean if Lucy can do it, why is so hard for you? Oh, I see.. Lucy is smarter.

Bring in NG with aicraft and ATV's. What National Guard? For how long? What if we need them in Iraq? Hurricane season starts in less than 90 days. There's 2000 miles of border just between the US and Mexico alone. Are you going to close the Canadian border too? As the question begs: You and what army? Tell Mexico that we may start to blockade all exports to the US if they don't start helping. In other words you would rather form an economic blockade than raise the minimum wage to a liveable level. Seems rather extremist if you know what I mean. If a company is found to have employed with a fake ID, fine'em $10K per employee. If no ID, $500K and 5 years in the big house. As usual, you protect rich corporations at the expense of the struggling small businesses. 10 K? Are you on crack? That's nothing to a megacorp, but would close my business down. Are you going to jail the Walton family? Do you even read this tripe before you hit the post button?

The Republicans are purposely dividing society by creating 12 million felons knowing that we do not have the ability to catch them. Once the undocumented realize that they have no hope of realizing their dream of joining our society, their massive demonstrations will turn violent. This will occur when the criminal gangs and extremists hijack the movement as has happened in France and Germany. Remember the riots of the blacks in L.A., Detroit and New York. You should fully expect our cities to burn again. Meanwhile the President can cynically support immigration reform knowing full well it will never pass. Expect the Patriot Act to be used in the next year to cut all our freedoms and the Republicans to run on the basis that only they can save us from the 12 million felons. Meanwhile we will ignore the loss in Iraq and our retreat. (We have begun our retreat now- 30,000 troops are scheduled to back this summer.Watch for infamous scene of the last helicopter in 2007) The easiest solution is as many suggest-turn off the job magnet using our current laws. Make an example of a couple of hundred employers-use local police to enforce the current laws against employers hiring the undocumented workers and the attrition will begin. If they can not eat and have no social welfare programs available, they will leave out of necessity. It may not be pleasant for awhile. We will not have personally demeaned the 12 million directly. Economic circumstance will have caused them to go home. Create a guest worker program that protects the ideals of our society because we need some foreigners and also maintain the dream of the undocumented of someday coming to America and becoming part of our society. We do not want 12 million disgruntled felons living among us. Look at any society today, and go back to ancient Rome, to see the problems where a large group lived in a society in which they had no rights to be part of the society and yet the society could not remove them. Look at Israel where they have the malconent of the Palestinians caused in part by the actions of the right wing Israeli political party and the resulting hijacking of the Palestinian movement by criminal politicians and religious extremists. The wall Israel is building is not helping it. I have been in Israel and lived in the fear of random terror. I have been in South Central L.A. and been in fear. Once this turns violent we are doomed as criminal activity takes on a life of its own. The approach being used by the Republican Congress threatens our lives and property in the next several months.

che, no where in my post did i make any comment regarding corporate america. how you read that into it is a mystery to me. in fact, i have asserted elsewhere, that we need no "guest worker" program; charity for corporate america, masquerading as necessary to make up for a lack of sufficient home grown labor. hogwash! my point was the polar opposite: shut down the flow of illegals, and repatriate those already here, with their U.S. born children. go after the employers. further, make clear to mexico (the main source of undocumented aliens) that the U.S. is not going to continue to be the dumping ground for it's failed economic policies. we will catch and return them. you take the illegals out of the equation, and corporations will be forced to pay fair wages to citizens, to perform those jobs they currently claim can't be filled any other way. it's econ 101: price is a function of supply and demand. you reduce the supply of cheap, undocumented labor, demand is still there, the prevailing wages have to rise, to meet that demand. this would require actual backbone, on the part of our elected representatives. i shan't be holding my breath.

    Che writes:

What if your nose falls off your face? The primary purpose of the NG is to provide security for the US. Their secondary task is disaster relief. So IF that comes true, folks will just have to help themselves, IF we don't want ACTIVE US military people involved. Remember, we do have some pretty good folks in the Navy, Marines, Air Force, CG, Army, etc... I would increase security along all coasts and POE's, including our border with Canada. But that isn't where the problem is. You say you are a medical professional. I assume you have heard or triage. You write:
In other words you would rather form an economic blockade than raise the minimum wage to a liveable level. Seems rather extremist if you know what I mean.
What I want is for Mexico to change its treatment of its own citizens so that they don't have to leave. It is their responsibility, not the US. As to how raising the minimum wage, which I support, has anything to do with forcing employers to pay ILLEGAL ALIENS more money is beyond me. Try to remember. The ILLEGAL ALIENS have no way demanding ANY specific amount. As for the fake ID. Who is responsible for the fake? Do you want to punish the person who has broken the law with a fake ID, or do you want to ignore him while going after the company? Okay. Let's make it five years in jail for BOTH. Works for me. Jondee - Me? Me? Think you're not a "sweetheart?" What would make me think that?

Well, if the repos can't divide, they can't conquer. If they can't lie, cheat and steal, they're basically screwed.

TL.... All immigrants should have access to all public services and benefits including driver licenses, higher education, and health care You are 100% correct...as long as they are here legally! Why is this 'legal' issue so hard for the left to get their hands around? Why are you willing to turn a blind eye to this... which not only hurts all those that obey the laws & come here legally, but also hurts those illegals? To any illegals... I say keep marching... keep flaunting your 'criminal' selves in front of the American public! That will get our attention, and it will back fire on you. We are fed up with our country being invaded... with everything being in Spanish... dual signs everywhere... being required to hit buttons for English speaking info. You want to live here, work here...? Then come here legally ... assimilate. Obey our laws... speak our language... teach your children our history... only then will you be truly welcome. If you don't like these minor rules we have set in 'our' country... stay home! Going into the streets and 'demanding' rights you don't have and aren't entitled to will get you nothing but resentment. (well... from those of us that love and respect our country anyway)

Dividing and conquering is when you tax people too much and create separate social classes. Or when you knock down the successful people and corporations to make everybody "equal" in the name of the "common good."

As much as I've disagreed with cpinva in the past, I'm with him on this one.

More Peaceful Protest's. Think they got a permit to go about this legally. Oh well what's one more time breaking the law anyways. What's a felon to do once they are told enough is enough.

Wow, there sure has been a lot of commentary on this. I feel obliged to add my two cents. There is an obvious need for some sort of reform, given the high number of illegal aliens. I know it's possible to legally become a citizen, as I've had a couple of friends over the years that have. However, it is a long, arduous process. Is the answer to streamline it a little? We can't shut them out without a chance if we are to uphold a fundamental tenet of our nation. On the other hand, I recently switched jobs and had to pay $500 a month for COBRA healthcare coverage. That really hurt and it only made matters worse to hear of non-citizens obtaining taxpayer sponsored healthcare coverage. Also to respond to Che's comments about the excessive profits made by oil companies, my thoughts are that it is only logical that they post big numbers. We all consume their product EVERY single day and demand continually increases. I don't like forking over $40 each time I need gas, but I think the high price is more of a supply/demand thing than price gouging. I recently read where Exxon's profit was less than 10 cents per dollar of sales. That makes me feel a little better.

He's right, Che. Just because a company is posting big numbers does not mean they are evil.

Too bad that white middle class amerika (what's left of it) doesn't have the same interest in getting off their fat asses and learning about the issue instead of evoking the usual "Close the border!" fantasy.
Che- get off of YOUR fatass and come to my city and learn what the illegals have done to destroy it. Visit the overcrowded schools- the illegals pack multiple families into single family homes. Listen to the horns honking at 5:00 A.M.- they are too lazy to knock on the door. Listen to the booming subwoofers and ridiculous loud mufflers on their cars. Notice the out of state license plates- the neighboring state does not require insurance. Go to the emergency room and see the uninsured illegals using it as a free clinic. Listen to the gunshots as they settle their gang disputes. Look at the graffit of the Latin Kings and MS-13. Don't you DARE defend these scum and call me a middle class white fatass you f***ing communist. You have know idea what you are talking about. By the way, they do not take care of my kids or cut my lawn and I'll outwork anyone of the little parasites

According the U.S. government, all male immigrants - legal and otherwise - are required by U.S. law to register for selective service. According to the National Center for Immigration Law, one in ten U.S. soliders who have DIED in Iraq have been immigrants. Five percent of those serving in our military are illegal immigrants. The first soldier to die for the United States in the current war in Iraq was Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala. He died for you. Is that the best you can do? You are pathetic. You know nothing about the impact of illegals. Everything I posted is true. You liberals are absolutely incapable of dealing with facts. You must resort to juvenile quips. Can any of you liberals respond directly to my post without the juvenile banter?

Gee, BB, that's rough. I'm gonna miss ya, dude. Don't let the door hit ya in the arse on the way out.

Someone had to replace the KKK. Their brand of hate was getting old fashioned and a bit stuffy. Their sentiment, whitlessly revealed by our troll populationis, is quite robust though. The new republicans.

Meet the new jerks. Same as the old jerks.

Digby, guest posting at FDL, has somethings to say about the new republicans. Well worth reading.
It's always interesting to see how the right wing deals with its inherent racism. They used to wear it proudly and openly, but since we have managed to make some progress in the last 40 years or so, they have had to become much more creative in the way they convey their solidarity with the racist among us.
S/he goes on to include xenophobia and homophobia as part of the gestalt. One thing that I have personally noticed is this:
In case anyone has missed their latest brilliant rhetorical twist, here it is: if you call them on their racism, you are a racist.
    Sound familiar? Digby at FDL

JRT - Ive lived in the city for half of my life, drove cab for a black owned company in the inner city for three years. I'll take any illegal I ever met over your ignorant, angry white man act. Btw, look up the word liberal in the dictionary. Its that big, fat, book with all the words in it. Look in the L section.

What morons. These are the people Jim thinks are somehow inherently superior to everyone else on the planet.

Try to focus now Jondee. Can you address directly any of the points I made. Please point out which of my remarks was "ignorant". Save the condescending dictionary quip. You people try so hard to be clever, but rarely are-that was a 7th grade level remark. Do you prefer "leftist" to "liberal". Squeaky- why should I have to move away from the "unwashed masses" I live in a nice neighborhood of a city that has been invaded. Please tell me which of the activities I listed are ok by you. Where is the "inherent racism"? Is illegal alien a race? Neither one of you will respond with anything rational. You are just like Charlie who has never even tried.

JRT, I haven't seen you offer up anything but a bunch of bigoted bs. You haven't made a single point worthy of response. You just pop off and cry in advance of the response you anticipate and frankly, you deserve. You want respect? Earn it.

Charlie... Gee, BB, that's rough. I'm gonna miss ya, dude. Don't let the door hit ya in the arse on the way out. Does anything you post make any sense? I'm not going anywhere... Squeaky.... The new republicans. What's wrong with wanting to uphold the laws of this country? JRT... Juvenile quips is all they got. They can't argue your point...so they call names or correct your spelling...
