Battle Lines Being Drawn

The Buffalo Springfield:

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong

Today: Battle Lines Behind the Battle Lines

In military communities across the United States, a debate over the Iraq war is being waged by reluctant, neophyte activists. Their microphones chirp and squeak, or don't pick up their quiet voices at all. Their signs are too small. They forget the banners.

"This is my community. I don't want to offend people here. But my husband is a soldier; he can't say anything. So it's my duty as a citizen to speak up," Kara Hollingsworth, a D.C. native and Army wife at Fort Bragg whose husband served two tours in Iraq, said as she took a seat on a panel of antiwar activists last week.

1,900 dead and counting.

As Ulysses Grant wrote, "I have always regretted that the last assault ...was ever made. ...no advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained."

The grim drum af death continues to take its toll.
Guerrillas have used bombings to kill nine Americans since Monday. Four US GIs were killed at Ramadi on Tuesday. The bombings come in the wake of a major US/ Iraqi government operation against Sunnis in Tal Afar, amidst US threats to de-urbanize Ramadi and other Sunni Arab population centers.

Come out this Saturday to protest with your neighbors and fellow Americans, and our friends around the world: We want our IMPEACHMENT RIGHTS back. We want our voting rights back. We want the US to cease commiting genocide. We want equal rights protection for the people of Gulf coast, and for all Americans. All out on Saturday.

For a couple of seconds there, I thought the Buffalo Springfield was a newspaper.

interestingly, grant almost resigned his commission during the mexican-american war, considering it immoral, and based on a false pretext. he remained long enough to complete his service, then resigned. what i'm a little confused by are those who claim the anti-war protestors are "unpatriotic", as though somehow blindly following the president, in a representative democracy, is the only "patriotic" thing to do. hogwash. public criticism of wartime presidents is an honorable american tradition, dating back at least to the war of 1812. james madison was excoriated by the northern press, especially the new england press, for his ban on commerce between britain and the u.s., because it resulted in major losses for the cloth manufacturers located in new england. a fair chunk of their exports were to great britain. several new england states even made vague threats about seceeding. they pretty much went ballistic when he asked congress for a declaration of war. this has been true of every wartime president since, for a variety of reasons. to suddenly claim it as unpatriotic is utter nonsense. being against the war in iraq, started on lies, and being against the soldiers serving there, are not mutually inclusive, though the republicans would have you believe otherwise.

BB-gosh isn't is a bit insensitive to proclaim that you are going to burn up a lot of gas for fun as a pro war statement. Do you feel so small that you have to brag about how rich you are. To flaunt your porche, gas, and racetrack certainly shows that you may be rich but have no class. If it was a joke you may want to add 'and people are dying so I can consume with abandon.' Shallow on all counts.
