Roman Polanski Wins European Best Picture Award

Roman Polanksi's "The Ghostwriter" has won the award for Best Picture and Best Director at the European Film Awards, held in Estonia. It won in six of its seven nominated categories.

Nominated in seven categories, the movie won the best director prize, best actor for Ewan McGregor, and best screenwriter went jointly to Robert Harris and Polanski.

Polanski gave an acceptance speech -- "through a Skype connection from an unknown location." Why?

[H]e still faces an Interpol warrant in 188 countries. Most European nations, including Estonia, have an extradition treaty with the United States.

Who's keeping the extradition request alive? DA Steve Cooley? Just another reason I'm glad he lost his bid to become California's Attorney General. I hope his treatment of Roman had something to do with his defeat. Kamala Harris was smart to call him out for the politically opportunist debacle. At least, it has negatively impacted his career.

straight face, asked quite a few people, mainly CA lawyers, if Cooley's trying to extradite Polanski had an effect on their decision as to whom to vote for as CA AG. Answer: none; and huh?

indicative of the voting public. And according to the article I linked to, it did have an effect, particularly in driving Hollywood to Kamala Harris.

On Oct. 27, a packed fundraiser Universal Studios will see the likes Disney CEO Bob Iger, Jeffery Katzenberg, Sherry Lansing, Steven Spielberg, Aaron Sorkin and others shelling out $500 to $13,000 for Harris.
That kind of support should fill the Democrat's coffers and catch her up to the $500,000 Cooley has over her in cash at this final stage of the campaign.

I found The Ghostwriter to be a less than stellar movie. The cinematography was great, it definitely set and kept a "mood." But it really dragged on. Was at least a half-hour too long, IMO. And I figured out whodunnit about 30 minutes before the end (maybe that's why it seemed too long?). If I had to give it a grade, I'd give it a B-.The performances were all very good, though, especially Tom Wilkinson's. I could watch him brush his teeth and say it's Oscar material.

this beautiful-looking film. I found Ghost Writers to be an intelligent thriller-- suspense marked by good storytelling. True, there were some pacing issues but it worked for me owing to a director very much in command of his art. The acting was excellent: Ewan McGregor and Olivia Williams were both very good, but I would give a big edge to Ewan. Pierce Brosnan was fine, and I even liked Kim Cattrall who was surprisingly good as the ice-queen assistant. No Chinatown, for sure, but it was in the top tier of films of the year.

American actors as English characters. Kim Catrall's accent was all over the place.

English/American English 'translations", e.g. ferry tickets were bought (in MA) as "single" or "return", rather than "one-way" or "round trip".
