Superbowl Time: Open Thread

Will JLo and Shakira be great as Superbowl half-time performers? Will anyone ever top Michael Jackson's 1993 performance?

As for commercials, I have never remembered a single one other than the one with Cindy Crawford and I didn't see it while watching the Superbowl but years later on late night tv.

For those of you watching, feel free to share your thoughts. (I am not watching the game but have it playing on a TV in another room so I know when half-time begins -- the crowd sounds really loud). For those of you not watching, here's an open thread, all topics welcome. [More...]

As for me, I topped out on the Donald Trump impeachment hearings days ago, when it was clear there would be no witnesses. I think his supporters have dug in their heels as have the Democrats, which means, no one will change their minds. Why couldn't Michael Bloomberg have run as a Republican, real-billionaire against self-professed billionaire?

At Snowbird Arizona (old crowd) Amy and Pete led the pack with Biden trailing and Warren just squeaking in.

with Drake University is only 60 people showed up out of a school of 3000. That is where the Bernie supporters are not showing up is coming from. He also was lagging behind his numbers with ex-pats. And don't forget Florida where Bernie was not even viable in the caucus. Now I don't think that is going to happen in Iowa but if he can't get old people and is relying on young people who so far at least don't seem to be showing up it is not going to be a good night for him.

gut feeling is Biden is going to under preform. Nate Silver got a hold of the final Seltzer poll
FiveThirtyEight can confirm that it contains the correct final findings of the unreleased Iowa poll: Sanders 22 percent, Warren 18 percent, Buttigieg 16 percent, Biden 13 percent.
.  Ugly numbers for Biden with everyone else holding their own, if Biden really craters Amy might make some real noise.

Phillipe Reines who sometimes has inside information was predicting a Pete win. One thing I did notice is that the supporters of the unviable candidates were not going to Bernie. They were disbursing to Warren or other candidates.

Please think twice, or maybe just once, about bashing any democratic senator who votes to acquit Trump to try to protect their seat.

WarnerMedia continues to consolidate programming from across its portfolio.

Audience Network, the AT&T-backed channel available to DirecTV subscribers, is being transformed into a marketing channel designed to promote corporate sibling HBO Max. The move, which impacts both its linear and streaming offerings, will become effective at a date to be determined in the spring. It leaves four scripted originals -- David E. Kelley's Mr. Mercedes, fellow drama Condor and comedies Loudermilk and You Me Her -- in limbo. Sources stress some of those shows could likely to make the move to HBO Max, though a formal decision has not yet been made.

"We will begin to transition Audience Network from its current approach to support AT&T's broader original content and marketing focus on the upcoming HBO Max service," Daniel York, chief content officer, AT&T Consumer, said Wednesday in a statement announcing the news.

Why couldn't Michael Bloomberg have run as a Republican, real-billionaire against self-professed billionaire?

There is zero chance he could win a Republican primary.  True he was elected mayor as one but that was NYC.  The national Republican Party is a different animal.  Even just since he was mayor it's a different animal.
No chance not just because it's now Trumpistan but really even more because he is the poster boy for everything they hate from climate to guns.  He's has spent hundreds of millions of his own money on these issues for years.  Even before Trump was president.

I thing this is a good look at the subject.  Not quite  as anti Bloomberg as the title sounds

Democrats Are Freaking Out About Mike Bloomberg

And here's where political math and Democratic National Committee rules get important. If a nominee isn't picked on the first ballot, then superdelegates--about 750 elected officials, party elders, and activists--get to vote in a second round. Sanders aides believe that their only real chance of making him the nominee is winning the first ballot. They've started using the phrase significant plurality, and arguing that the superdelegates should give the nomination to whoever's in the lead, but they're nervous that this won't happen.

The sheer level of social ignorance and political illiteracy that exists in our country is frightening. And the truly scary part is that those who are clearly the most misinformed amongst us inversely (and not surprisingly) see themselves as the best-informed.

If I had to speculate, I'd say one significant cause of this is the present state of our media, by which people are able to filter out or block anything that either upsets them or otherwise doesn't align with their general worldview, and instead allows them to reside comfortably within their own comfort bubbles with simpatico individuals.

Oligarch quite literally means a very rich business person with a great deal of political influence.  I would say undue, and often harmful, political influence.

Just because we may not wish to hear it doesn't make it any less true.  If Bloombucks is sincerely open to spending one billion dollars to "save America", he could do any number of things besides buying commercials and paying political consultants.

Here's a goodwill free consultation for the ol' Oligarch...

    • Buy 750 million dollars worth of land and plant 250 million dollars worth of trees.

    • Open a chain of no-cost/low-cost opioid addiction treatment centers.

    • Cancel 1 billion dollars of low income individuals medical debt.

    • Buy-back 1 billion dollars worth of guns off the streets and destroy them.

    • Bribe very employee at the immigration detention centers to accidentally leave the cages unlocked and walk off the job so the prisoners can escape.

    • Offer Trump, Pence, and McConnell  333 million a piece to get on his private plane for a one-way trip to Moscow and never return.

Sh*t I will even kick in the same percentage of my net worth for any of these endeavors, which I think works out to thirteen dollars and thirty three cents.

Good to hear from you and know that you are well--at least as well as any citizen can be at this point.

Took your earlier suggestion to give Andrew Yang a good look, and I did so.  However, he did not make it to the higher reaches as I, and others, evaluated the Democratic primary contenders. But, if he were to unexpectedly find traction and become the nominee, I would surely be in his corner.

At this point, I have just this one major criterion, beat Trump. Four more years and the fascist march will be complete.

A secondary criterion is which of the contenders is most likely to attract quality cabinet officers, nominate District/Appellate judges and Supreme Court justices in the mold of Jimmy Carter/Bill Clinton/Barack Obama, and, finally, be handy with a hose--so as to effectively hose down the White House.

And, too, to select a capable vice president who can serve if needed--an important factor, not so much because of age-related worries, as much as concerns for the safety of any Democratic president. Just today, a strange substance was found in Adam Schiff's House office area by Capitol police. An inconvenient Ambassador was told to be taken out--as spoken to his thuggish dinner companions. The country is going to go through some things, as the don as warned.

As for policies, the top contenders have similar plans and proposals, and they all will have a steep climb to effect their proposed progressive legislation, certainly with a Republican senate, and even with a Democratic senate, should that happen. In the primary, they, of course, work hard to distinguish themselves. But, the country will be on the right track with most all of them. None will trample rights or impose their religious beliefs at the expense of civil liberties.

Much can be done by Executive Order, but such orders are not necessarily permanent. And, none seem to have a hair-trigger for bombing Iran or some other country that gives us side-eye.

So bottom line for me, I will vote blue no matter who. Any mistake made will not be of an existential character with any Democrat who becomes the presidential nominee. If disappointed in the result, there will be another primary and election in four years. Better to experience imperfect national policies than to continue our perfect national disgrace. And, to risk, further, the clear and present danger.

the less news I watch, the better I am Brother.  Glad to see you rockin' the comments section as hard as ever.

But of course getting rid of Trump is # 1, but I guess I got 1A's and 1B's too that some contenders aren't as interested in as others.  I don't wanna get too bogged down in "electability" and forget about why we have elections, and presidents, and a congress. And the daunting jobs we need them to do.

And in the case of Bloomberg, a billionaire swooping in and trying to buy the damn thing is a problem for me.  And I wonder how much of his purchase is about stopping Trump and how much of it is about stopping the Bernie/Liz wing.

I wonder how much of his purchase is about stopping Trump and how much of it is about stopping the Bernie/Liz wing.

he does not believe that Bernie/Warren can win. So, there is no doubt he is trying to stop them from getting the nomination. However, he has also pledged to spend to help elect the eventual nominee even if it ends up being Bernie/Warren. That is no small thing.

A recent poll I saw showed that about 40% of Bernie and Yang's supporters said that they would not vote for another democrat should their choice not be the nominee, whereas, 90% of Warren's and Biden's said they would vote blue no matter who. That bothers me.

I was hoping for Kamala Harris but that hope got shot down early.
Amy is hanging in there but I don't know for how long. Same for Pete.

I will take Bloomberg over Biden, Bernie or Yang.
Bloomberg has put his money where his mouth is on 3 issues that I care about, environment, Planned Parenthood/abortion, and gun control.
Can't stand either Biden or Bernie and am just not sure what to make of Yang.
But, any one of them over that monstrosity that is in the WH.

Because of course she would. Why would we expect anything otherwise from her? Maine voters would do well to retire Collins this fall. Most of us have gotten exasperated watching her play the part of Lucy holding Charlie Brown's football.

So, when test results are less than optimal, do we pledge to do better by our children and grandchildren, or do we instead throw out the test?

    Los Angeles Times | February 5, 2020
California may pause student physical fitness tests due to bullying concerns - "Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to pause physical education tests for California students for three years due to concerns over bullying and possible discrimination against disabled and nonbinary students. The move comes after annual test results showed a growing percentage of students scoring as 'not healthy.'"

I understand the very real and valid concerns about school bullying. I would also agree that using body mass index as the primary criterion for measuring one's actual physical fitness needs to be seriously re-evaluated or at the very least, considered on an individual basis rather than as a statistic of group demographics. So in that regard, I can't argue with Gov. Newsom's rationale for suspending the physical fitness test in California public schools for three years.

But personally, I think what we really need to do here is recommit ourselves to the full inclusion of comprehensive health and physical education classes / programs as an integral part of all K-12 public school curriculums. Because honestly, those statistics we're seeing from these now-paused BMI tests strongly underscore the fact that far too many school districts across the country have instead moved in the opposite direction over the years in a misguided effort to cut costs.

Such shortsighted budgetary decision making has had unintended and potentially devastating consequences for American children between the ages of 5 and 19. The percentage of children worldwide who are considered overweight or obese has risen alarmingly over the last two decades, from 10.3% in 2000 to 18.4% in 2018. But in the United States, that number is 42%.

    Aloha.

We simply give the teachers the test 4 months before hand so they can drill the correct answers into their charges heads

Doug Collins (R.GA)the local yokel who became a national yokel owing to his high decibel, fevered defense of Trump in the House impeachment process,  was counting on Trump's support in the Republican senate primary against interim senate gubernatorial appointee, Kelly Loeffler (filling the vacancy caused by Republican Senator Johnny Isakson's health-related resignation).

However, during Trump's Hellzapoppin rally in the East Room, Trump gave high raise to Senator Loeffler for her "nasty and mean" defense of Trump.

Poor Collins, but it should not have been surprising to the former preacher--Ms Loeffler is a FOX-ready blonde who is rich. And, no doubt endearing in that Ms. Loeffler is inclined toward the grift.  For example, she loaned her campaign $5 million and is charging the campaign interest...not illegal, but a little unsavory. But, then, she is just hitting her Republican donors.

Very good...story line and production.  Am now awaiting the more intriguing real time story of the two popes, Francis and Benedict.  Not the confabulation: "The Two Popes".

A big ongoing Vatican story of the tension between Pope Francis and the retired Pope Benedict, who still resides in the Vatican is grandly remodeled quarters he set up in advance of his historically rare retirement.  Benedict still wears papal white and is referred to by the papal honorific, Your Holiness.

Benedict shorty before stepping down promoted his long-time assistant, Georg Ganswein, head of the papal household and archbishop, to oversee the new Pope. Ganswin, referred to as "Gorgeous George" lives with Benedict, is his Secretary, and caregiver.  Matters recently boiled over when Ganswein organized publication of a new book co-authored by Benedict that presents the arch-conservative theology that is in opposition to that of Francis. Benedict has removed his name from authorship and Georg has gone missing in an unexplained absence.  All the elements of The Knives Are Out and Boys in te Band.  Could be a blockbuster.

Trump just tweeted a bizarre image that shows his spray on face to say it was photoshopped and fake news.  If you have not seen it it's pretty easy to find.  Along with the memes.  My favorite was a guy spraypainting a fence with a hole Trump had just looked through

    but this is the best

Someone actually photoshopped out the orange spray paint to reveal what he actually looks like.

Every cable news show should use this image.

the black and white version? Mind you, these photos were twittered out by the WhiteHouse photographer, Willian Moon...who didn't see the problems with them? or anticipate twitterreactions? Wonder how much longer he will be the WhiteHouse photographer. Maybe he'll be marched out in chains, right after the Vindmans and Sondland.
