Friday Open Thread

Colombia is mulling over whether to allow companies to put coca in their products.
Lawmakers are working on a proposal that would allow anyone — not just indigenous groups — to harvest coca crops for traditional and medical uses. According to the project’s sponsor, Sen. Juan Manuel Galán, tens of thousands of coca farmers currently locked in the drug trade could be selling their crops to a thriving industry making products like the ones Coca Nasa has pioneered.
Sen. Juan Manuel Galán is the son of former Liberal party presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento, who was killed in August 1989 by the Medellin cartel. In May, he announced his candidacy for President of Colombia in 2018.

Someone besides me takes issue with the series Narcos and its "reliance on doctored history."

Time for a new open thread. All topics welcome.

in the real world some really encouraging news on the economy.
The incomes of typical Americans rose in 2015 by 5.2  percent, the first significant boost to middle-class pay since the end of the Great Recession and the fastest increase ever recorded by the federal government, the Census Bureau reported on Tuesday.

In addition, the poverty rate fell by 1.2 percentage points, the steepest decline since 1968. There were 43.1 million Americans in poverty on the year, 3.5 million fewer than in 2014.

The share of Americans who lack health insurance continued a years-long decline, falling 1.3 percentage points, to 9.1 percent.

"Great" sex bad for older men (none / 0) (#1)

but good for women according to CNN article.

Older men who found sex with their partner extremely pleasurable, or satisfying, had higher risk of cardiovascular events than men who did not feel so

For their female partners, however, results were different. Women who said they had frequent, extremely satisfying sex had a lower risk of hypertension, a common precursor to heart disease.

As with most health-related articles, I'm skeptical.

Pipeline halted... for now.. (none / 0) (#3)
by desertswine on Fri Sep 09, 2016 at 06:15:01 PM EST
    NYT -

BISMARCK -- The United States government ordered a pause in construction on part of a North Dakota pipeline that inspired protests among Native Americans and environmentalists on Friday.

The order came after a federal judge's ruling rejected efforts by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to halt construction of the Dakota Access pipeline, which would run just north of their reservation boundaries.

Moments after the ruling came down, the United States government in an unusual move issued a statement saying it would, for the time being, not allow the pipeline to be built underneath a dammed section of the Missouri River that has become a focal point of the pipeline dispute. The statement, from the Justice and Interior Departments and the Army, urged the pipeline company to pause construction.

Tribal leaders said they were heartened by the government's move and relieved that, for the time being, the Dakota Access pipeline would not be allowed to cross under their water supply. "When there's a wrong that keeps continuing to happen, it's oaky to stand up against that wrong. That's all we did," said David Archambault II, chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux. "I'm just so thankful that agencies are starting to listen."

Trying to find additional lives. You didn't know what was going to come down on all of us -- and they handled it.

Germany's interior minister has warned that the country is home to more than 500 Islamic militants who could be capable of carrying out assaults on their own or as members of "hit teams."

"The terror threat now stems from foreign hit teams as well as fanatical lone wolves in Germany," de Maiziere said in the interview ahead of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the United States, which were partly coordinated from Germany.

"The hit teams are secretly smuggled into Europe and prepare their actions without being noticed, as we saw with the attacks in Paris and Brussels," he added. "But it's even more difficult to uncover the fanatical lone wolves. Unfortunately, there is a real and present danger from both threats."

However, Germans do. And once they receive status a a citizen of the EU, can find travel around the world much easier.
That German state officials now admit to this quantity of Islamic militants residing in Germany is scary, and they appear resigned to the fact that they will have repeated terror incidents in their country.

The willing acceptance of the vast amount of refugees into the EU, and the terrorists that piggybacked this effort, will have political ramifications seen already, Brexit, and the advance of far right political parties which would never had the acceptance of the general public prior to the refugee crisis.

The whole refugee debacle will continue to have repercussions, and hopefully provide historical reference in future incidents. It would have been in Europes best interests, let alone those displaced by the horrors in the homeland, to rally the world to quell the actions causing this crisis, or at a minimum create a safe zone where these unfortunate people would not have to be displaced across continents.

The center-left Social Democrats, with whom Ms. Merkel governs nationally, got 31 percent in the state, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and are likely to continue their coalition there with Ms. Merkel's bloc."

I can only wish that the far right had just 21% of the vote here.

Merkel's party is center-right and they are in a coalition government with the left - a party that agrees with Merkel on immigration.  The far right is nowhere close to taking over.

(I also believe in karma - I will bet OSU has been the beneficiary of botched calls a time or two).

And, OSU should have paid attention to the omen that was right in front of them before the game started.

But the players didn't know about the botched call.  They were told to come out and execute what seemed to be an impossible play - and they did it.

Those things happen, and sometimes the mistake unfairly costs one team the game. That is not the fault of the CMU players, any more than it was the fault of the 1990 national champion Colorado Buffaloes when the refs wrongly awarded them a fifth down on 4th and goal at the end of that season's pivotal game with Missouri, which afforded them the opportunity to score the winning touchdown when they otherwise should've rightly lost.

Because the Big 12 instant replay crew didn't challenge the MAC field crew's misinterpretation of the rule in question, the Big 12 honchos were compelled to uphold both the intentional grounding penalty as called on the field and the untimed down which resulted from it. The final results will stand.

So, congratulations to the Central Michigan Chippewas, who let's remember were a 21-pt. underdog on the road in this game. All the Oklahoma State Cowboys had to do to win the game on that untimed down was prevent a Hail Mary / hook and lateral, which by any reasonable definition is a last-gasp play of desperation. They didn't, and they lost. End of discussion.

    Aloha.

The Cowboys were called for intentional grounding on a 4th down play just prior, and while I'm not sure why this is the case, it looks as though NCAA rules prohibit officials from making that call as time runs out on the last play of the game. And yet even after conference and NCAA review, the Hurricanes' victory was allowed to stand, even as the entire officiating crew was subsequently suspended for the rest of the season.

I look for more suspensions of officials in this instance. Unlike last season's incompetence at the end of the Duke-Miami game, this involved an obscure rule. But that said, it's still a rule, and the officials clearly blew it by allowing CMU that untimed down.

    We'll see what happens.

is apples and oranges. One is mistakes during the game. Today's is a misapplication of a rule after the game had ended.

    Parent
... at the game' conclusion, and not after it ended. The MAC officials flagged OSU for an intentional grounding penalty on 4th down, which also so happened to be the game's final play. Per NCAA rule, they apparently weren't allowed to call that particular penalty on the very last play of the game.

Anyway, the issue is moot, per my post below. Big 12 officials have determined that since the Big 12 review officials in the stadium booth above also missed the call, and didn't notify the MAC field officials of their error, the game is over and the final result as called on the field stands.

    Aloha.

    Update No. 2: (none / 0) (#78)
by Donald from Hawaii on Sun Sep 11, 2016 at 05:36:31 PM EST
Both the MAC officiating crew and the Big 12 instant replay crew who worked yesterday's Central Michigan-Oklahoma State game have been suspended for two games by their respective conferences. Additionally, the Big 12 further decided that this particular instant replay crew will not be assigned to work in any postseason games.

    Parent
"NCAA Rules permit instant replay to correct egregious errors, including those involving the game clock (FR 12.3.7). Walt Anderson, Coordinator of Football Officials, acknowledges that the Big 12 replay crew missed an opportunity to stop the game to inform the MAC officiating crew of the misapplication of the intentional grounding penalty as time expired that resulted in the untimed down leading to Central Michigan's game-winning touchdown in its 30-27 victory over Oklahoma State. Also by Rule 1.1.3.b the result of the game is final and cannot be overturned." (Emphasis is mine.)

and my Ducks won their games, and will undoubtedly move up in the rankings,  do you have a prediction about those moves?  Your Huskies are much closer to the top at 8th, than the Ducks at 24th.  The system is way too complicated for me, but both you and CoralGables may have already figured  out the new rankings.  It's difficult for me to wait until the rankings are posted in the Miami Herald on Tuesday.  When and where can they first be seen?

Next Saturday the Ducks take on the Nebraska (5.00 / 1) (#46)

Cornhuskers. Game will be on ABC at 2:30 (CDT).

Interesting factoid- the Cornhuskers' coach is former Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley. His OSU record against the Ducks is not that great. Hope it continues.

Ducks won last night, but showed some real weaknesses. Too damn many penalties, for one. Sloppy tackling for another.

Royce Freeman is a joy to watch.

    Go, Ducks!!!

The Huskies are at #8. Ducks advanced from #24 to #22.

    This week's AP Top 25.

    Parent

... by their opponents, while other Top Ten teams such as Clemson and Georgia were lucky to escape yesterday even though both were top-heavy favorites who were playing at home, I'd offer that it's way to early to take such national rankings seriously. If you want to see the weekly rankings before Tuesday, check here.

That said, I think this year's Huskies are potentially the real deal, while the Ducks are still in reloading mode. That assessment could easily change by the time they play each other on October 8 in Eugene.

For one thing, the Huskies host Stanford one week prior to playing Oregon, while the Ducks travel to Wazoo to play a tough Cougar team that gave Boise State all it could handle yesterday and beat the Ducks last year in Eugene.

For the record, the Stanford Cardinal are still my (sober) pick to win the Pac-12 North, my loyalties as a UW alum notwithstanding.

    We'll see what happens.

ranking sites.  I finally remembered these early games don't mean as much as the later games played in their own conferences, unless they lose.  The lesser ranked teams that play teams in the top 25 earn big bucks for their colleges, which is good for them.  Also the Miami Herald did publish the rankings this morning, unlike previous years.  Go Ducks.

... upon who they play. I've noticed that some of the big boy schools have taken recent criticisms to heart, and are endeavoring to schedule more robust nonconference opponents.

Alabama opened this season with USC, even though today's Trojans aren't the Trojans of yore. (That's certainly not Alabama's fault.) That will help during those years when the inter-conference competition is less than stellar, as may be the case with the SEC this season, much as it was for the Pac-12 a few years ago.

Oklahoma and LSU are to be respected for scheduling road games at Houston and Wisconsin, respectively, much more so than Clemson and Georgia for playing Troy and Nicholls State at home, even both of those prohibitive favorites nearly choked on their respective cupcakes.

    Aloha.

Here is Jon Alterman on why Obama correctly opposes the bill to allow 911 families from suing the Saudi government.
THE FIX: I got an email this morning from one of the bill's supporters, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), featuring the families of 9/11 victims asking Obama to sign the bill. That's difficult to say no to.

ALTERMAN: The optics are really difficult. But the other piece of it is: There are a lot of non-American victims of terror outside of 9/11. There are more victims of collateral damage from U.S. military action in the last 10 years than there are U.S. victims of terror. We have been using drone warfare for more than a decade. There have certainly been civilian casualties [we could be sued for].

From my perspective, we really ought to question why our own federal government and officials haven't been held accountable for having actively maintained its alliance with a duplicitous 21st century feudal kingdom, even as not-insignificant factions within that kingdom's hierarchy obviously plotted against us behind our backs.

Seems crazy this is just being vetted out now - especially considering Republican concerns around foreign influence.  I don't see a significant source of Trump family wealth being let go.

    Newsweek

Never before has an American candidate for president had so many financial ties with American allies and enemies, and never before has a business posed such a threat to the United States. If Donald Trump wins this election and his company is not immediately shut down or forever severed from the Trump family, the foreign policy of the United States of America could well be for sale.

I have less of a problem w/the pyramid enriching American businesses/employees and companies getting contracts via Congressional Oversight than I do w/the potential conflict of interests here.  Just one example from that article:

With Middle Eastern business partners and American allies turning on him, Trump lashed out. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal--the billionaire who aided Trump during his corporate bankruptcies in the 1990s by purchasing his yacht, which provided him with desperately needed cash--sent out a tweet amid the outcry in Dubai, calling the Republican candidate a "disgrace." (Alwaleed is a prodigious tweeter and Twitter's second largest shareholder.) Trump responded with an attack on the prince--a member of the ruling Saudi royal family--with a childish tweet, saying, "Dopey Prince @Alwaleed_Talal wants to control our U.S. politicians with daddy's money. Can't do it when I get elected. #Trump2016."

Once again, Trump's personal and financial interests are in conflict with critical national security issues for the United States. During the Bush administration, Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital, and Washington reached a bilateral agreement to improve international standards for nuclear nonproliferation. Cooperation is particularly important for the United States because Iran--whose potential development of nuclear weapons has been a significant security issue, leading to an international agreement designed to place controls on its nuclear energy efforts--is one of the UAE's largest trading partners, and Dubai has been a transit point for sensitive technology bound for Iran.

Trump is a whole new level of shady...all I was trying to say was our foreign policy hasn't been in the interests of the American people at large for over 50 years.  Nor in the interests of peace or universal human rights.

Trump's foreign policy would focus on enriching himself and maybe his Russian buddies vs. the normal enriching the people who sell oil or fighter jets or computer chips for laser guided missiles.  In all honesty, I'm not sure which is worse!
