Trump Promised To Run For President If "Right Candidate" Not Nominated By GOP

The Donald is endorsing Newt Gingrich today[Update - fearing the point I am making here, Trump is going to endorse Romney and thus justify his not running. The short fingered vulgarian is a charlatan of course.] The Media needs to ask the short fingered vulgarian what happens when Gingrich loses to Romney. In December, Trump said:

It is very important to me that the right Republican candidate be chosen to defeat the failed and very destructive Obama administration[. . . .] But if that Republican, in my opinion, is not the right candidate, I am unwilling to give up my right to run as an independent candidate.

I demand that Trump run. Media, hold The Donald's feet to the fire. The clown car needs its biggest clown.

Speaking for me only

    Again, I say: Newt? (5.00 / 1) (#3)

I still say that makes no sense. Why would he endorse Newt Gingrich now? Gingrich is a surefire loser. It just doesn't seem like Trump to endorse someone after a loss. Also, isn't Newt's big sugar daddy a casino-running competitor of Trump's?

    I'm dubious, too (none / 0) (#6)

Also, various other sources including CNN are reporting this morning he's going to endorse Romney.  So who the heck knows.  He's perfectly capable of announcing a big press conference to announce that he's decided to endorse somebody, but doesn't want to say who until later.

I'll eat my hat if he ever does actually run for president.

doesn't make sense if you're a rational person but trump is not really rational when it comes to politics

the coming new season of The Apprentice, and The Donald wanting some free promotional time, is there?

An endorsement of Newt is far more likely to be the equivalent of fitting Newt for a cement overcoat - I just have no idea how anyone can take Newt seriously, much less a manic Newt accompanied by a bloviating Trump who we know is only in it for himself.

First the Cain endorsement - what next? the Palin endorsement?  If that happens, I think Newt can be officially declared to be a bona-fide crazy magnet - and in some respects, the Romney people ought to be relieved to see the crazies lining up with Newt (not that Mitt doesn't have some crazy ideas, too, but he packages them in a way that seems more sane).

    Yeesh.

This has nothing to do with politics or the Republican Party. This is just Trump engaging in a bit of P.T. Barnuming for the latest season of The Apprentice.

Just as his flirtations with running for President were connected with last season and other ventures.

Why Newt?  Endorsing Newt gets you more ink.

Down the road, he'll probably suggest it's time for Newt to pull out of the race, leading to the inevitable "Newt, You're Fired" headlines. Just in time for May Sweeps? Probably. If Newt lasts that long.

Maybe my brain is playing tricks on me.  Or maybe he's still mad Romney wouldn't sign up for his debate.

    It's quite the kabuki show, isn't it? (none / 0) (#8)

At this rate Obama could make Ron Paul look like a serious case of flaming sanity and still be miles to the left of these clowns. Right?

He goes with Gingrich. There's no upside with his endorsing Romney. He's the frontrunner now and Trumps endorsement won't mean a thing.

But it he endorses Newt, and he somehow pulls out a victory, just imagine the crowing from "The Donald" about what a King Maker he is.

He already endorsed Romney today (none / 0) (#17)
