Which reminds of the 30 Rock episode where Alec Baldwin explained the magic aura for good looking people - folks always make excuses for them, and then they showed a photo of young Alec Baldwin. He also has not age gracefully.

I always think the gold standard for non-surgically aging gracefully is Helen Mirren.

A half an hour with BTD in real life is a month in blog time!  I enjoyed the comments in the video about tone and issues.  It seems simple and yet it is consistently beyond many politicians.  I remember Obama interviewing with gay media in the spring of 2008 and being defensive about his lack of face time with the gay media, as part of his all-inclusive persona, I guess.  The tone of all that just struck me as obnoxious, not homophobic, just obnoxious.  I think he was trying to present himself as non-pandering or "non-Clinton" but in doing so you sometimes piss off groups who expect to be treated with some appreciation and respect as core constituencies.  Of course, these days I imagine Obama has some different feelings on inviting Warren (Rick, not Elizabeth) to speak at inauguration and whatever noble sentiment that was supposed to represent.  Which is the other thing about core constituencies, we have long memories ;)

    Dan Froomkin today...

The 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement soured the American public on trade deals that were supposed to boost the economy -- remember the giant sucking sound that followed? -- but it left America's globe-spanning corporate behemoths panting for more.

Since then, powerful business interests have cheered the signing of 19 more such agreements. The three most recent, with South Korea, Colombia and Panama, won congressional approval in October.

Despite being hawked as job-creating measures that open the world to American goods, however, these trade agreements have historically resulted in massive outsourcing of U.S. manufacturing jobs and increases in exports.

    [snip]

And now the White House is forging another one -- this time a regional compact, known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement, with Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. It's the first trade agreement entirely negotiated by President Barack Obama, the biggest since NAFTA -- and potentially a lot bigger if and when China and Japan join in, as they are expected to eventually.

At least in China factory workers get 100% employer paid for social safety nets - under the windows of the higher floors.

by Edger on Thu Feb 02, 2012 at 12:58:53 PM EST
also from another perspective than the content of it, Armando.

I'm struck somewhat by the, ummm, contrast, if you will between a comment I recalled you posting here about your view of Occupy last November in your own post The 1% Empire: Occupy and Gandhi in which you noted that "The Occupy movement is engaged in a campaign of noncooperation with the 1% empire".

I agree with their goals and am not one to nitpick with methods that have worked better than anything I have suggested or tried.

...and the I think fairly obvious conclusion people should draw from your discussion with Conn in the video above that you at the same time appear to hold a strong - for lack of a better word - faith(?) in the two party system (a 1% construct) as a vehicle for constructive and positive social change.

I wonder if you would expand on that almost dichotomy, perhaps in a separate post if it's more than you would want to go into in comments here in this post?

    of what oculus just described

say you want to link to Google

    1. with your cursor, click the URL in the website's address box to highlight it
    2. with the URL highlighted, press Ctrl and the letter C on your keyboard at the same time to copy the URL
    3. place your cursor in this comment box and press Ctrl and the letter V on your keyboard at the same time to copy the URL

after step 3, you will have this (but you can't use it, because whole URLs can skew the TL site):

    http://www.google.com

now let's say you want the reader to be able to click the word Google & be taken to the Google website

    here is what you do

type the word Google in front of the URL:

    Googlehttp://www.google.com

now type an opening bracket in front of the word Google and a closing bracket after the URL:

    Google

    & there is your link

thanks, oculus, for this handy method

(dog forbid) Romney presidency too. With him not being a darling of the right, they will have even more power over him since he can't afford to lose whatever tenuous support they give him.  A point that seems lost on Obama - or maybe the math is just different on the Dem side.

I haven't paid enough attention to notice BTDs point about Romney's better tone with immigration policy, but in thinking about it, that seems true of Romney in general. Most of the GOP seem like they can't speak about immigration or poor people without making some dog whistle racial slur. I'll give Romney credit for that much anyway - as clueless as he is, I don't get the 'southern strategy' vibe off  him. That's why I think he will do better in the general that anyone else.

You asked about the recent poll on Walker vs. other candidates, especially the one Dem who has announced (Falk).  I tried to summarize some things that I saw about the poll that were flaws, to my mind, such as the massive margin of error.

Here's a better summary of some such matters.

Btw, in recent days, more reporting:  Barrett is even more the frontrunner in funding by far, with more than $400,000 vs. about $25,000 for others.  Among them, Cullen now has withdrawn.  That's too bad; after Barrett, I think Cullen had a good chance and would have been a pretty good gov.  (Both of those factors are missing in all but Barrett, now, to my mind.)
