New Year's Day Morning Open Thread

Most New Year's Days, we'd be preparing to watch a day of college football. But Sundays are ruled by the NFL. The bowl games have been moved to tomorrow.

Tim Tebow faces a make or break game for the Broncos, and I suspect, for his career. While it seems likely Tebow will get the starting nod for the Broncos next year, if he wins today, advancing the Broncos into the playoffs, he probably gets the whole season.

That's a lot of pressure and the Broncos also have to deal with the fact that they unnecessarily handed the Chiefs their QB for today, Kyle Orton. That was a pretty inexcusable move by Elway and I am a bit surprised that more is not being made of it in Denver. While Orton is a terrible QB in pressure situations, when nothing is on the line, he can be good. The Chiefs and Orton have nothing to lose so I expect they will play well. And win.

Which means that whether the Raiders give up ANOTHER 1st round pick for Carson Palmer depends on the Chargers and Phillip Rivers saving the Raiders from themselves. Cuz if the Raiders make the payoffs, they get bounced in the 1st round and lose another 1st round pick. Since it is the Raiders, that is what is going to happen. Raiders beat the Chargers.

The big game to night is Giants-Cowboys. I think the Cowboys win.

The party we went to last night was marketed by its host as The Last New Year's Eve Party You'll Ever Get to Attend.  We played a game at midnight too and the winner received the 2012 survival kit....MREs, ductape, a ball of twine, a bottle of premixed margaritas (not great but who gets to be picky as the world ends) and a giant margarita glass.

I caught the evil nose virus the other day - went through ten rolls of tp blowing my raw nose yesterday - so I went to bed heavily medicated about 8pm last night. It worked too - my head is only three feet wide today, rather than four. ;-)

waterpik thingies for your sinuses.  I used it last year with a lot of success.  I have some evil sinus issues living here.  Then my asthma doctor put me on Veramist and Nasonex.  Really set everything straight for my nose, didn't use my waterpik thing all summer.

Last week though they find out that two people in Louisiana were using similar devices with tap water, and an amoeba was introduced into their sinuses that made its way to their brains and killed them.  Bleh, I had used tap too a few times because it said that you could.  Usually I used a bottled water but a few times when I was desperate and on the verge of a sinus infection and didn't have any in the house I used tap.

Creeped me out so badly I threw the waterpik device in the trash.  It works, it works well, but I was just too creeped out to look at it ever again.

you could just boil your tap water for a couple of minutes (making very sure that you let it cool completely before putting it in your nose).  I guarantee that no amoebas will live through boiling.  They like warm water, but not that warm.

    Parent
Yes, I discussed that with someone (none / 0) (#55)
by Militarytracy on Sun Jan 01, 2012 at 06:51:10 PM EST
else who uses it.  She only uses some sort of filter on her tap and she was mad that I threw mine out.  She said that the water is fine coming out of her basic filter system, but I thought it was doubtful and told her that it probably needed to be boiled but she was going with only using water out of her filter system.

I suppose the thing that creeped me out the most was that when I was using it I had a strange thought that something could be in tap that could hurt you via your sinus membrane.  One of those thoughts where you tell yourself a second later that you are just being paranoid and silly.  So when the thought turned out to be not entirely silly, I was just too creeped out to have the thing around.  What if someone else found it in the closet and decided to use it using tap fresh out of the tap?

    Parent

    I don't know what type of filter (5.00 / 1) (#58)
by Zorba on Sun Jan 01, 2012 at 07:05:45 PM EST
she is using, and whether it gets rid of amoebas.  It may well do so.  Mr. Zorba has a portable filter that he takes when he goes fishing and camping in the "wild" that is supposed to get rid of all micro-organisms, including viruses.  Boiling gets rid of the amoebas too, all live bacteria (not necessarily all spores, though), and viruses, and you don't have to keep buying filters.  In any case, even though the amoeba deaths sound horrible, you're more likely to die of a lightning strike than amoebas, and lightning deaths are pretty d@mned rare.

story to me over Christmas. She considered it a cautionary tale about my use of a neti pot, the neti pot being something she thinks is silly.

I do not think the neti pot is silly. It makes a huge difference for me. If I don't use it I am totally clogged up, sniffling and blowing my nose, and coughing a weird little cough constantly.

Boiling the water seems like a good idea, though. Even if the chance that an amoeba would travel to my brain and kill me is small, it would be just my luck to be that one in a million who got felled by the nasal amoeba.

So, henceforth i will boil then cool the water before poring it through my nostrils in that oh so weird simulation of drowning that is the neti pot.

(Call it an "abundance of caution"), boil the water for five minutes.  You can boil way more than you need and store the extra in a very clean container (washed, rinsed with boiling water or sterile water that has been boiled earlier, and if you're a bit paranoid, rinsed with a bit of rubbing alcohol and then rinsed with sterile water again).  I prefer glass containers- I get a bit paranoid about over-use of plastics, myself, unless you know that your plastic containers are BPA-free.  It should keep safely (tightly covered) for a long time.
(As an added bonus, the boiling will remove the chlorine, if your water contains chlorine.)

by Militarytracy on Sun Jan 01, 2012 at 07:41:23 PM EST
that a Neti pot wasn't helping.  I know it helps many people here though, and my asthma doctor sells them in his office.

Even though a Neti pot didn't help me though, the waterpik devices would pressurized the water and get it way up into my upper sinuses.  I could be on the verge of a sinus infection, you know....when you start to feel a little feverish and achy? And it would stop it.  Really surprised me at first because I was so used to nothing helping other than a Z-pak and nasty nasty prednisone.  I think anything is better than taking prednisone, so when I began working for me I can't begin to say how happy I was.

I'm getting allergy shots now, and the Veramist stopped the sinus infections.  Adding Nasonex doubled down on it.

Back in 2008, the Gallup analysts pointed out, most Americans regarded him as pretty liberal, but that didn't stop him getting nearly fifty-three per cent of the vote. However, on that occasion he was facing an aging, ill-defined opponent, and he was armed with the strongest campaign slogan that any candidate can have: it's time for a change.

hard as hell now on post.  To improve morale the O club got a complete makeover a few years ago and it is now called The Landing.  They poured millions and millions into the place.  It was staggering to me how much money they put into it.

The Landing has no provided government funding now.  There is no place for the WOC students to hold their reception now after graduation that doesn't cost each class at least a $1500 room fee.  They can raise money, they all do while they are in WOC school.  They wash cars, you name it, whatever they need to do to raise needed funds for their class activities.

Thankfully when the General found out, and he found out holding a reception of his own and then being presented with a $1500 room fee bill :) he has found some funding some place for now.

It is hard though to watch our government pour so much money into different things at different times, crazy money...and then not maintain them.  As The Landing starts going down the tubes too, so goes many jobs with it now.  The jobs that came and went.

Someday in the future it will return to the dusty O club it once was, and morale will need to be improved and someone will walk in and declare the place a dump and it will all start all over again.

When we rockband as a family, I sing, husband plays guitar, Josh is drummer, and that dog runs around trying to figure out what she gets to do.  She knows we are doing something together, we are all jointly focused, she is being left out.

Yesterday we also celebrated Zoey's 4th birthday and I was making and decorating cupcakes and my husband was making ham rolls for the adult party later.  She ran around the kitchen staring at us.  Once again we were doing something together, a joint effort, and she was being left out.  I caught her staring so hard at me while I decorated a cupcake that I cracked up.  She was staring at me doing it like she was trying to memorize what I was doing so she could do it later.

The amount he received was about $1600. I thought that was pretty great, and kinda made me proud to be a New Yorker, and an American.

This year that amount was cut back to $415...one time only....for the whole winter.

    (Propane) not much change.

But, that brings up an interesting point. The agency doesn't require competitive bidding. And, from my own unscientific research, the price varies very significantly among distributors. I've found as much as $1.25 difference among local jobbers, and that's just using listed, retail pricing. Certainly the HEAP agency could drive down prices substantially, but they don't.

Something feels screwy here, and I'll state one other thing categorically:  I have never experienced more sarcastic, disrespectful, and arrogant thugs as those who comprise the fuel delivery industry. Abusive, and in-your-face, they act like they don't need, or want, your business.

    Amazing.

Just suffering a Disney hangover here....blood alcohol level dangerously low.

And I am nearly literally speechless after a week with my sister and niece.  Never jabbered that much in my life! I was a blithering idiot by last night. I began to sympathize with the GOP presidential field.

Need a mute day or two.

I think this game with Denver is a PRESSURE game for Orton.

He is playing the team that booted him.  The quarterback that replaced him.

    That would stress me out.

if the Raiders lose as well they're in the play-offs with the tie breakers.

The Raiders really being the Raiders, they're losing to the Chargers.

    And lose they did--7 to 3. (5.00 / 1) (#46)

Another craptastic performance by the Tebow led Denver offense.  At home no less.

Timmy:  6 of 22 for 60 yards passing and 6 for 16 yards rushing.  One Tebowseption and one Tebowfumble.

Yet they still back into the playoffs.  Ugh.

I wonder if the Packers would be interested in trading Matt Flynn for Tebow...

It would be nice to have a QB that can actually throw the ball.

    Cowboys win? (none / 0) (#6)
by MKS on Sun Jan 01, 2012 at 12:05:25 PM EST
I could see an easy Giants win.....

The Cowboys have fundamental flaws in the O and D lines....The Dallas press are very skeptical that the Cowboys can win this game.

And the Giants need to bring it in on Defense as they can, and have Eli just keep his head in the game.....I think they do that with a Division crown and playoff spot on the line in a nationally broadcast game.  The Cowboys have lost something like six in a row of national broadcast games.

    Giants 28, Cowboys 17.
