Bachelor of the Year

Valentine's Day is around the corner and another season of The Bachelor is underway on ABC. Last season's Bachelorette coincided with the end of the Democratic primary, and probably as a refuge from cable news, I started watching it, rooting for the hometown guy Colorado snowboarder Jesse Csincsak.

Jesse won, he and Deanna got engaged and as I reported here they were happy for a while, but then Deanna ended it,which I was sorry to see happen. A petition drive is now underway to make Jesse the next Bachelor. More than 4,000 signatures have been collected.

This year's Bachelor season hasn't been very exciting, but I've kept up with Jesse, via Facebook, My Space and telephone. I interviewed him recently (he was so patient, it took an hour and a half) and the results are below: Twenty Five Things You Might Not Know About Jesse Csincsak (starting, of course, with who he voted for in November): [More...]

Twenty Five Things You Might Not Know About Jesse Csincsak

Who he voted for:

Barack Obama. Not because he’s a Democrat or because of his political views but for who he seemed to be as a person and because he might bring change. He couldn’t be worse than Bush. It’s awesome that an African American is President. John McCain was just riding on his own coat-tails as a war hero. Sarah Palin? A publicity stunt by McCain. She’s an airhead.

His Do-Gooder Side:

His Jsak foundation (Just Snowboarding Ambitious Kids) helps young snowboarders with Olympic aspirations improve and build skills to promote themselves and raise money for training, travel and other expenses so they can attain their goals.

One of those he's helped is up and coming snowboarder Tara Weldon. Check them out on MTV's series Made.

Lessons Learned from The Bachelorette:

(1) How to open his heart. He’d never been in love before being on the show. He never had that feeling of loving someone so much he’d be willing to die for them. He also learned that if he didn’t open his heart, he’d be going home.

(2) Remember where you come from. L.A. can make you jaded.

Best Part of Being on the Bachelorette

The friendships he made with the other guys. Many of them are still very close and they have regular get-togethers. The latest one was a few weeks ago in Breckenridge.

What You Didn’t Know About his Parents (who got rave reviews on the “home town date” episode of The Bachelorette:)

They were bikers when young. His mom looked just like Cher.

Favorite Actress:

Angelina Jolie

Favorite Meal:

Steak and mashed potatoes or surf and turf, he loves shellfish. And sushi.

His Adventurous Side:

He loves to travel. He’s been to the Bahamas, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico and is looking forward to Costa Rica and Thailand.

Something He’s Never Done:

Been on a cruise.

What Comes Easy:

Shutting down the engines and taking a break

How Much Time He Spends Online:

As much as six hours a day. He’s passionate about responding to his friends and fans on Facebook and My Space. He replies to email. (At last check he had 4,200 friends on Facebook, thousands on My Space and 147 on his You Tube channel.

His Greatest Regret:

He used to be a hothead with a bad temper. He regrets the burned bridges, he’d like to go back and make amends.

His Biggest Influence:

His dad or pro-snowboarder Jeff Meyer,

Where He’d like His Next Condo:

Huntington Beach, CA. He’d spend summers there and winters in Breckenridge

His Post-Snowboarding Career Plans:

  • Real estate ventures(he owns his own home and a rental property.)
  • Becoming a sports manager or agent.
  • Writing a book about snowboarding.
  • Being a stay-at-home dad.
  • A production company has approached him about a show with at-risk kids. More to come on this soon.

What He Looks for in a Woman:

Someone who is outgoing, athletic, independent, not scared to put men in their place and comfortable in her own skin.

His Romantic Side:

He’s a huge snuggler and loves to watch movies at home. He has more than 700 films on dvd.

His Best Features:

His shoulders and legs. [My vote: His eyes. Don't miss these new Jesse photos at Little Miss Diva.]

His Predictive Skills:

He wasn’t too good at picking Jason’ Mesnick’s faves on this season’s The Bachelor. He has no inside scoop on who Jason selects, but at the time I interviewed him, he predicted Megan, Melissa, Molly and Lauren. He’s at 50% right now with Megan and Lauren not getting roses last week.

On His iPod:

Jack Johnson, 80's music, Dave Matthews, 50c, JayZ, Twisted Sister.

The Oldest Woman He’s Dated (And What He Liked about Her):

35. She was understanding and very laid back.

When He Wants Kids:

Soon. Kids are the best thing ever. As a snowboarder, he’s going to have aches and pains earlier than most people. He wants to be young enough to enjoy being physical with them. He’s “so ready” for marriage and kids.

How many: A boy and a girl would be ideal, with the boy 2 to 3 years older.

Where You’ll Find Him in Breckenridge:

Teaching snowboarding (book a lesson here). Having appetizers at Blue River Bistro, a beer at Salt Creek or dinner at Modis.

Other Places to Find Jesse:

At the Aspen-Snowmass Open, Feb. 5 to 8, coaching some of his snowboarding kids at a the halfpipe event.

On America's Mosted Wanted sometime soon, where he's helping John Walsh try to solve the murder of snowboarder Ben Bradley, who was killed for his snowboard outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Ben's board was from of a limited edition of 200, made by Never Summer of Denver. Finding the board could lead to the killer.

Is He Available?

His Facebook page says he and Holly Durst, an LA children's book author and former Bachelor contestant, are “in a relationship.”

The Hollywood Gossip,Extra TV and People Magazine have more.

Shorter answer: Stay tuned.

    wait until he tries 51!

Hey, I used to live in both Huntington Beach and Denver and would love a home in both places again - I've got a shot, don't I?  I've got that "putting men in their place thing down cold!"

But I'd have to throw away his iPod (none / 0) (#2)

Before I interviewed him, I made a list of about 50 things I was curious about. Some had to do with the show (I was mostly curious about the mechanics of it and what we don't get to see) and the various relationships, but I wanted to keep the interview to being about him rather than the show or Deanna, so I culled it down and thought 25 was a good number.

I just can't imagine being secure enough at 26 to put my life in front of a national audience like these kids do.

Facing rejection is bad enough without an audience!

I also thought DeAnna coming back this season is just a publicity stunt (she does seem Hollywood-bound after all), but Jason doesn't deserve to be hurt by her again.  I'll never forgive how she let him get on his knee.

Re: this season--can I be caddy for a second?  Is it just me or is the widow from AL scary looking?  (I think it's her eyebrows)

though some think botox. She's definitely looks older than 34, but she is one of the "sweetest" women on the show, which is probably why I think she'll be the one to go home tonight. She doesn't have a lot of sex appeal.  But again, she seems like a nice person.

I felt bad even writing my comment (though I had to share it with someone who would know what I'm talking about) b/c she does seem like a genuinely nice, generous person--pretty remarkable considering the cards she dealt.

The Dallas cheerleader looks familiar for some reason?  In the six degrees of separation, my brother went to college with Trista, she even dated one of his friends.

that's not very nice. Seriously, he doesn't seem the type to do any of those things. He's 26 years old -- give him a break.

and maybe it is, for some people.

It's funny, isn't it?  The years from about 10 to 18, there's all this intense pressure for our kids to be more grown-up, and then when they hit their early 20's, we all of a sudden want to treat them like they're too young to know what they're doing.  Maybe it's that we don't want to face the truth that we're older, and that the 26 yr olds don't think of us as dating material, but mother-in-law material.  Ooh, that does hurt!

My older daughter is almost 26, and will be married 2 years in April.  She's still my kid, but she's not a kid.  And that, as far as I'm concerned, is a good thing.  Especially because they're thinking about having kids themselves, and I think it helps the whole parenting experience to not be a kid - maturity-wise or age-wise.

Even if it will make me a grandmother... :-)  Now, there's a moment of truth!

I was never sad to see my kids make (none / 0) (#15)

those big transitions - I was sad that the time had gone so quickly - zip!  One minute you're bringing them home from the hospital and the next it seems like you're packing them off for college.

With girls, those years from 11 to about 17 will either kill you or make you stronger; I wear my gray hair like a badge of courage!

But...there is nothing quite as satisfying as realizing that all those times when you felt like you had no idea what you were doing, or if you were providing your child with fodder for years of therapy, you were actually doing a damn fine job!

Sheer luck, I think, considering all that is out there that could go wrong, but I like to think that our being confident our girls had what it took to be their own persons is part of what made it easier for that to happen.
