Talking Smack

This thread is not about heroin. Instead it's a thread where you can talk smack.

About college football, which kicks off tonight.

I'll start. The SEC is easily the toughest conference in the country. The Big Ten stinks especially the Badgers (shot at TChris' team and conference.) If Jeralyn cared about college football, maybe I would take a shot at Ralphie, but she doesn't. So it would be wasted.

This is an Open Thread and you CAN talk smack, about college football. Go Gators!

I was watching them play ND (my alma mater) back when we were...uh...good, and began jumping up and down shouting as Samardjia (sp?) caught a pass and jumped a receiver to win the game.  I hadn't taken to the time to notice that Iowa--where I was watching--was playing Michigan and had just lost.  This was one of those gigantic sports bars, and my friends were frantically screaming at the 50 or so hawkeyes who wanted to beat me up.  But, and I hate to say this, even as a GA native, if you want to see real insanity over football y'all need to come down South and witness it SEC style.

When I was in college, even though we were pretty good, we lost to Notre Dame 4 straight years.  Kind of depressing.  These days we mostly clobber ND which makes me much happier.

One of my work colleagues is a good Irish Catholic who, of course, roots for Notre Dame.  Then he had a niece who got rejected at ND and admitted to Michigan, which instantly converted him.  Now he wants to see ND lose at everything.

My favorite Irish athlete is the legendary Johnny "One Play" O'Brien, who caught the winning touchdown pass against Army in the "Win One for the Gipper" game and, apparently, never did anything else of note in his entire college career.  Hey, if you're only going to get one moment in the sun, make it a big one!

just to give you an idea how completely clueless I am about sports for the first 9 months I lived here I pronounced this "e-len'-i"
one day I was talking to my brother, who was a high school coach, and he said, um, actually thats pronounced "ill-line'-eye".
this is why I do not comment in sports threads generally.

See, I'm at my niece's wedding rehearsal dinner.  Her future father-in-law, a life-long resident of Illinois, pronounces that final "s."  Since I'm on my second glass of wine and failing to edit, I comment on this, as generally people laugh when anyone pronounces that final "s."  (I didn't laugh.)  He sd. he's always sd. it that way, doesn't everyone.  My brother, who is fluent in French but who also grew up in the Midwest, goes into the French pronunction at that point.  Funny conversation.

Two things that do not go together: the Midwest and fluency in French.

Think of "Detroit," and then think of how it ought to be pronounced in French.  Many of the streets in Detroit are the same way; my favorite is Dequindre  ("Duh-QUINN-durr").

Just outside of O'Hare Airport you'll find Des Plaines, Illinois.  Don't you dare to try and pronounce it the French way, it's Dez Plainz.  We're American, gosh darn it, we're going to say things the American way!

I lived very close to campus for years and during game day it was either stay in or go out and stay out.  The entire campus was a giant tailgate party before, during and afterwards for hours.  My brothers came down once and perfected the art of schmoozing free drinks off of fans - it helps when the home team wins.

I was talking to a local merchant one game day.  It turns out that Buckeye football has a LOT in common with a Grateful Dead concert, complete with middle aged men coming into town getting high or drunk and never seeing the game, preferring to indulge in whatever party they stumbled upon or arranged.  And I had thought these people were serious fans, not family men looking for an excuse to get wasted and spend a weekend away from home.

    Live and learn. Heh.

I just hope my Huskies aren't hanging all their hopes on Jake Locker again. He can't do it alone and Coach Willingham is lucky as heck he still has his job.

But I'm still expecting USC to trounce everybody. And I love their defense.

Beside the Trojans, it's all Ducks and Bears for the Pac-10 this season.

I grew up one block from UCLA and we were Bruins fans forever. Now that I'm in Seattle, I don't have to be as loyal... but I'm biased w/ USC. I've known Taylor Mays since he was about 10 years old (that's about the last time I was taller than him) and we are all really proud of him. Huskies wanted him badly -- so did every other team -- but he left us for sunnier pastures w/ Pete Carroll. I think he made the right choice.

My mom was the biggest Bruins fan ever. If she were still alive she would be terrribly upset with my support of USC, our main rival!

I grew up in a Notre Dame family, so USC was doubly-hated.  It's ironic because my father got his Master's degree at USC but grew up as Notre Dame fan. Part of being raised as a Catholic I guess.  Sadly, he's gone too.

for the 2008 State Farm Arch Rivalry game between Missouri (just behind the Gators at No. 6 in the AP) and Illinois.  But that ranking won't stand after Mizzou beats a ranked team and the Gators fall to Hawaii.  I predict Missouri will move into the top 5 and Florida will drop out of the top 10.

Is this how smack talk works?  ;-)

best team in the country. Just as long as the frickin OSU Buckeyes don't make it to the championship AGAIN.

is new.  The Big Twelve, with the exception of Oklahoma, is usually invisible.

I have to admit that one of the most enjoyable moments of last season, aside from kicking KU's a$$, was winning/helping knock Ohio out of No. 1 the week Illinois beat them.

I don't think they lost one player last year and should have a great team.  Bradford (QB) is getting excellent preseason praise.

I think the one who has to really worry is Stoops.  The Sooner fans were not happy with the way last season ended.

Pretty easy putting up good records by playing all those 1AA schools. Pac-10's where it's at.

Since the 2000 season, head to head the Pac-10 has a 9-6 advantage over the SEC.

Players drafted from the PAC 10: 37 (3.7 per team)
Players drafted from the SEC : 35 (2.9 per team)
