Coming Up for Air and Open Thread

If you missed our earlier open threads this week, you may not know I haven't been blogging for a few days because I'm moving.

I am finally in the new place, 3.5 miles from the old one, and everything is still in disarray. If you're in the mood for details, click on "more" below:

Despite downsizing two times in the past four years, this was the most inte nse move yet. I spent days throwing stuff out. It still took three movers 8 hours Thursday to pack me and four movers 13 hours to move me. Not to mention $4,000.00 That doesn't include the 6 hours the electronic people spent here Thursday putting in new cable outlets and installing a house-wide wireless network.

The TL kid came over with food at 10:30 pm. I got up at 6am to start unpacking and I still haven't found my computer cords and components.

I also have jury service Monday and pleadings due.

So I doubt I'll be around before Monday night, unless I can blog from the courthouse while waiting to be excused by lawyers who would never put me on a jury. (That's all of them.)

As for why I moved, I'm a perennial renter. The owners of the last place had one of those sub-prime loan that came due...you can guess the rest. Despite my three year lease, I had to go.

The good news is I'm in a brand new house -- the first person to occupy it. I have another three year lease and the owner is a pretty big builder with, he assured me, "deep pockets" so he won't lose the place.

And no, the experience hasn't made me want to buy a house. At this stage of my life, it's far too much responsibility and more of a commitment than I'm willing to make.

Okay, I'm off to search for my computer cords. Have a great weekend everyone, and this is an open thread.

Update 6:45 pm MT: Thanks to the TL kid, my home office is all hooked up.... computer, printer, fax machine, an external hard drive and external dvd burner, Fujitsu scan snap scanner, stereo speakers and subwoofer ...,he also hooked up my kitchen Apple Macbook with the 23 inch monitor and speakers. What he got: An HP LaserJet printer, a leather notebook and some dishes. What a great kid. He even offered to come back in a few days to hook up the dvd recorders to the cable boxes.

I have not moved in 10 years because I hate it so much.  You have my sympathy.  And suggestion, if you open a box of stuff you didnt use in your last hous - give it to the Salvation army and save space.

I did that when I had to paint - no i dont think it applies completely as you did not pack with the intent to move with it and thhus will not be wasting the space on the truck.  But any reason to clean out the house should be acted on, imo.

I have another trip to the salvation army planned for tomorrow so if you want me to drop by and pick stuff up just leave it by the drive way.

    Cheers -

Last year I tossed out everything. I had this thought that if I croaked my kids would have to go through all this stuff. It was so much fun. Now my house is awesome, comfy and easy to clean. I also made a rule, if I buy one thing, I have to get rid of five things. I thought I was losing my mind not remembering where things were, but having done that, I realize I am not batty (well maybe) my living space was. PS, I have a big Hillary sign on my window and some woman just knocked for Obama. Now, what did they think, it was soft support.

Krugman is probably the one person that can get me to vote for Hillary Clinton, and he is doing a great job of it.

I think nominating HRC is very risky if not a mistake -- it will really help the GOP Get Out The Vote efforts, but I am not happy with what little I have heard from Obama regarding Health Care and other issues.

Jeralyn congratulations on your move.  Sorry to hear you too were a victim of the sub-prime crisis.

    Universal Coverage.. (none / 0) (#11)
by MileHi Hawkeye on Sat Feb 02, 2008 at 02:40:34 PM EST
...suggests, by it's very definition, coverage for all.  To provide health care coverage for everyone would require either a single payer or total revamping of private coverage.

Under the present corporate system, trying to acquire coverage on your own is a difficult, confusing, if not impossible task if you aren't in perfect health.  A condition as seemingly benign as acne will get you declined for coverage in the individual market with most carriers.

Carriers are driven by profit, and the best way to achieve a fat bottom line is to limit risks and not pay claims.  And, they have it down to a science.  It will be quite a challange to effect the kind of changes needed for universal coverage in the private market.

Consequently, there is a very large population out there that can only qualify for health care coverage through their employers (pooled risk and group guaranteed issue laws).

Personally, I don't think the profit motive of Corporate America has any place in providing health care services. But then, I am a liberal fascist.

Sorry Judith, I know that probably doesn't answer your questions.  Just needed to vent a bit...

    "Voting for Winner" (none / 0) (#30)
by Stellaaa on Sat Feb 02, 2008 at 04:54:56 PM EST
I just had a conversation with a German friend. I was talking about people who want to vote for the one who will win. He reminded me how that is basically unethical, you should vote for the one you believe in. Wow, what a concept.

Germany does not have primary elections, ... (none / 0) (#32)
by cymro on Sat Feb 02, 2008 at 06:55:27 PM EST
and those elections are quite different from a general election. The purpose of a primary is not to vote about the party platform on issues, it is to select the best candidate for the general election. Therefore it's essential to vote for a candidate who can win.

When the nomination stage is the responsibility of a smaller political party organization (like the present elected representatives, as in the UK, for example), the same imperative applies. Those party voters always chose a leader who stands the best chance of attracting votes from a majority of the electorate. In the US we have many more people participating in the nomination phase, but the purpose is the same -- to pick a candidate that will win.

Try explaining this to your German friend, and see if he reconsiders his dubious claim. When picking the strongest candidate is the stated purpose of the primary, how can it possibly be "unethical" for individuals to take that into account when casting their votes?

    Operation Torch (none / 0) (#36)
by squeaky on Sat Feb 02, 2008 at 08:55:24 PM EST
Just what we need. I feel less safe already.

Under a tactical plan called Operation Torch, the officers will board trains and patrol platforms, focusing on sites like Pennsylvania Station, Herald Square, Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Center and Times Square in Manhattan, and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

Officials said the operation would begin in March.

Financing for the program will be funneled to the Police Department and will come from a pool of up to $30 million taken from $153.2 million in new federal transit grants to the state.

Would have been nice not to divert more money to the goons, and spend it on better service, lower fares etc. I am sure that in their down time the "torchers" will be harassing everyone else out of boredom.

    Bad For Obama (none / 0) (#43)
by squeaky on Sat Feb 02, 2008 at 11:34:30 PM EST
In Newton, Iowa, on December 30, 2007 Obama said that the  The Nuclear Release Notice Act was "the only nuclear legislation that I've passed"
    The NYT begs to differ.

But, contrary to Mr. Obama's comments in Iowa, it [the bill] ultimately died amid parliamentary wrangling in the full Senate.
    [snip]
Illinois' senior senator, Richard J. Durbin, a fellow Democrat, was a co-sponsor, and three other senators, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democrat of New York, later signed on. But Mr. Obama remained its primary champion.

Strange that he took something that was good and lied about it.
Obama's response Fact Check on New York Times Story responds to the NYT article in depth but mentions nothing about that the main point of the article:
why did he say it passed when it did not even get to a vote?
Strange, and not good for Obama
