Mukasey Collapses

Update: "The attorney general is conscious, conversant and alert. His vital statistics are strong and he is in good spirits," according to a Justice Department spokesperson.

original post:

This is frightening:

Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed during a speech Thursday night and lost consciousness, a Justice Department official said. ... Mukasey was delivering a speech to the Federalist Society at a Washington hotel when "he just started shaking and he collapsed," said Associate Attorney General Kevin O'Connor. "They're very concerned."

Mukasey began slurring his words during the speech before collapsing and losing consciousness. He was taken to George Washington University Hospital.

We send our best wishes to the Attorney General.

That the Attorney General has the best health insurance money can buy, that he has a secure retirement income, that no one has privatized his social security and that no one will humiliate or torture him while he is having his medical emergency.

It would be terrible if doctors were to withhold treatment for pain just to get Mr. Mukasey to talk about what he knows about the Bush Administration's torture regime.

And if someone did, in fact, waterboard him while he is in the hospital, I would hope that no miserable creep would try to cover it up or try to prevent Attorney General Mukasey from obtaining justice for what he endured.

I hope Alberto Gonzales's rightful successor makes a speedy physical recovery.

Yes, that what it sounds like from the sketchy details.  The good news is that prompt medical attention to a stroke significantly improves the recovery prospects.

Brings back lots of sad memories.

but are there any liberal legal groups with the same stature as the Federalist Society?

Would the ACLU be its opposite number?

    The liberal counterpart (none / 0) (#6)
by Peter G on Thu Nov 20, 2008 at 11:24:01 PM EST
to the Federalist Society is the American Constitution Society for Law & Policy.  The ACLU is not analogous, and is not "liberal" or "conservative" in this sense.  The ACLU stands for a bold, uncompromising and even-handed application of all the rights guaranteed by our Constitution and civil rights laws to everyone, regardless of political, philosophical, social or religious viewpoint, and keeping government power to violate or limit those rights in check.

    Probably a TIA, a stroke without immediate lasting (none / 0) (#11)
by JeriKoll on Fri Nov 21, 2008 at 12:12:29 AM EST
It sounds like a TIA.  Just like a stroke, except the patient seems to recover fully, fairly quickly.  Still it is an indicator and a warning of problems.

    See for report:

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Justice Department says Attorney General Michael Mukasey is "conscious, conversant and alert" after collapsing during a speech in Washington.

Spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement that the attorney general's vital statistics are strong and he is in good spirits. But the nation's top law enforcement official will spend the night in George Washington University Hospital for observation.

Mukasey had loss consciousness during the speech.

Carr says Mukasey is getting excellent care and appreciates all of the good wishes and prayers he has received."

he could not reconcile the administration's policies (which he was defending) with maintaining consciousness.  According to an eyewitness report from someone who was there:

Attorney General Mukasey was roughly twenty minutes into a speech defending the administration's torture policies and particularly arguing against prosecutions of people who made decisions in the aftermath of 9/11 (essentially arguing against what he believed amounted to the criminalization of policy differences).

Some seven or eight minutes prior to the incident a heckler start shouting, calling Mukasey a "tyrant." But the AG seemed unfazed by this; and members of the audience shouted the heckler down.

The eyewitness tells me that Mukasey seemed particularly in earnest about the argument he was making. And when he first began to falter it appeared he was merely choking up. Soon, what at first appeared to be choking up blended into slurred words. Twenty to thirty seconds later he collapsed, his fall broken by a nearby FBI agent.

The room fell silent. After a moment there were shouts from the table where Mukasey's wife was sitting, calling to turn down the stage lights. A woman in an evening gown, presumably a doctor, ran up to the stage and the FBI agents hovering over Mukasey allowed her to attend to him.

Lesson:  getting earnest about defending torture yields an embarrassing public collapse.

    Karma's a beeyotch, ain't she?

without knowing the gist of his speech, once I heard the Federalist Society I immediately thought KARMA too. Whatever he was speaking about and given his current position in THIS ADMINISTRATION.....the external realities of what has been done overroad the intellectualized BS coming out of his mouth and it caused his body to pass out from the g-force.

    as prepared for delivery, here.

You can read it, but it pretty welll lays out the defenses the torturers should consider using.

He even reminds everyone that he was in NYC on 9/11.  Of course, he conveniently forgets to remind us of his ratifying the in-detention torture of unforitunates with South Asian or Arabic names, with his response to a complaint from one that "you don't look so bad".

Washington State Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders acknowledged Tuesday that he shouted "Tyrant! You are a tyrant!" during a speech by the nation's attorney general last week.

    [snip]

Sanders said Tuesday: "It kind of irked me that this is making fun of the Geneva Conventions. ... To make a joke about it, when we're a signator to this convention which prohibits torture."

He denies that he "heckled" Mukasey, who appeared unfazed by the outburst and was released from a hospital Friday in good health.
