Johnny Carson has died at 79 of emphysema. Here's more on his career. From another article:

“Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning,” his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. “He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service.”

R.I.P.

    He had the good sense to have Orson Welles,Gore "MY lizard is filming Firing Line tonight" Vidal,and fire-storm drummer Buddy Rich on regularly. Replaced by a bit of a buffoon,sorry to say. R.I.P

    He had a real touch for the everyman. When he would have someone on who, say, grew the biggest rutabaga, he might have fun with them but never at their expense. A complete class act.

    He was always a rational man and a skeptic. On national TV, with the help of James Randi, he disemboweled Uri Geller's paranormal claims. Who, in this vast media wasteland we have today, would dare to awaken the public to such charlatans?

    I remember his Ronald Reagan skit---where he was in charge, in command, and ordering everyone around him. Of course, the animal skits. He was a class act. The best.

    I heard that George W Bush studied Johnny Carson tapes in preparation for his first presidental campaign to learn how to shade his immaturity, cringe , smirk and scared look in the eye into something comforting and "telegenic".

    TO:DEUCE Just wait you will get one soon, 5 years ago millions of people got letters from the IRS, For money owned most paid without asking any question's it has been on the news shows and on the radio, if you want to check just go to the government irs web. And sad that carson is dead will miss him.

    Fred - The government does not go after individuals who are not self employed for SS (FICA)taxes. By law the employer must deduct and pay the taxes of the individual, both employer and employee portions plus medicare. If the person was self-employed and didn't pay, then they are supposed to pay, and if they did not, then they may have been contacted. Frankly, it sounds like an urban myth. Can you provide specific examples?

    One time the crew replaced Carson's desk with a balsa wood replica. When Karnac came out and did his signature trip onto the dias, the desk collapsed into pieces. Funniest fall I've ever seen. Carson was as hysterical as everyone else. Johnny Carson was a class act. Through war and scandal and all the craziness he never let his personal politics or opinions influence the show. I think Leno and Letterman have at least remembered this lesson. It was all about entertaining us at the end of the day. I think he was quite a person for trying to help us go to sleep in a good mood.

    et al - I watched his first show and his last show, and many in between. And I never thought about his politics, or cared. Too many of today's entertainers seem determined to educate instead of entertaining, and as a result they do neither. They should get the DVD's of his shows and study, study, study. Pity the big E got him. It is a very ugly way to go. But I bet he went out with style and class. He always had it and always showed it.

    The hardest I have ever laughed in my life was watching 8 hours of "Best of Carson" while on mushrooms. Half the time he didn't even need to speak, just the expression on Johnny's face was enough. Not to mention Ed's drunken laugh. I'll miss ya Johnny, no one since could hold a candle to you. The fortune teller bit was my favorite.
