There is (5.00 / 4) (#4)

something about this event in particular that turns my stomach.

There used to be a cinematic cliché which contrasted the reality of what was happening to people in WW2 Germany, particularly Jewish people, and then the film would inter-cut scenes of Germans singing and drinking in their local taverns - oblivious.

That's the way I feel about this obscene convocation of fat-cats.

The media, combined with self-serving elected officials, combined with an incompetent opposition, have created the dire circumstances which face many Americans. But they do not suffer, and they feel nothing.

And then there must be somewhere in their feeble skulls the knowledge of what is happening in Afghanistan, the indifferent treatment accorded wounded veterans, and the horrific hunger strike going on in Guantanamo.

It is not a time for levity by sophomoric amateurs.

Isn't it one if the truly great things about this country that we can have such discourse and disagreements openly, on the Web?  As opposed to countries that try to limit their citizens' access.
Let us all disagree and fight.  That is one of the things that makes us stronger as a country, despite all our failings.

The clip that keeps running through my mind (none / 0) (#11)

is the one of Obama saying "I am not the strapping young Muslim Socialist I used to be".  Then you see some folks from Hollywood hooting with laughter and doing some sort of fist pump thing.
It makes me sick, because I know the people he is aiming at (tea party fringe) and those people are easy targets. Also it is about going for the easy joke and calling people racist and ignorant.  I don't think it comes as any surprise to anyone here that I have been fed up with that tactic since 2008.
It may come as a big surprise to Obama but those people need a president too and he's it.  For him to party with all those other elite and crack jokes at the expense of people who aren't welcome to the party is NOT self deprecating humor and it is not humor aimed at the other elite or other party leaders or media big wigs.  That is the only humor that should have been on display.

I Give that Maybe a 2... (none / 0) (#13)

...compared to Bush pretending to look for WMDs, which was easily one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen form any elected official when you consider how many people ended up dead because of that little booboo.  Or we can call it what it really was, a huge fricken lie conspired by an bunch or war monger idiots who completely miscalculated just about every step in that warm including the premise for initiating it.  Which apparently is something to joke about in public.  But I hear you, insulting middle ages white racist Christians with their own words is unforgivable.

And FYI, usually the Muslim socialist are the easy targets, not the middle aged white Christians who think their race and religion entitle them a different set of rules and when that doesn't happen, they act like get their jesus on and play the crucified to a T.

Not really sure how you think calling out a racist with their very words is more disrespectful then the original racist comments.  And maybe all those non powerful minorities were joyed to finally see the entitled racist ahole majority taken down a notch because when they get back home, they will get back to being blamed for all that ails the country by those very same folks who have convinced themselves they are superior creature.

That being said, the President should have a little tact then taking cheap shots at the nitwit brigade that spent two elections trying to convince the rest of the country that a man they all knew to be a Christian (remember Jeremiah Wright) was actually a Muslim, which of course in their racists mind is something bad, not worthy of the Presidency.

Yeah, those poor racist aholes getting called out using their own words, uppity might be the word you are looking for.

I am not fan of Obama and people in power should have enough grace to not be bothered by or feel the need to take pop shots at us less lower life forms.  But it's well deserved and earned, it just should have been served up by someone else.
